And Coach Gary Hansen feels that his 1983 team is capable of turning around the Lancer fortunes. The Lancers were not hurt badly by graduation, and several returning starters and lettermen mean the 1983 squad should be stronger than last years team that won only one region game. We havent been that strong the last couple of years, said Hansen. But this year we have more depth than we have had in several years, and we are1 better in the skill positions than we have been recently. We have six or seven starters back, which is not a lot, but it is more than we usually have. Another area of improvement 1 that Hansen hopes will ultimated ly add more points to the is his teams attitude. All of our returning lettermen are doing a good job and the kids are working hard. We have better team unity than in the past few years and they are more committed, Hansen said. That commitment can help put the Lancers in the state playoffs, according to Hansen. We feel good about our chances of making the playoffs because the kids are working and are dedicated, Hansen continued. We are looking for leadership from our seniors. Leadership has to come from them, if you dont get leadership from them youre in trouble.- quicker than average, said spots and Facer will play offensive guard. The defensive squad will be anchored by seniors Chris Shoop at end, and Dave Brimhall and Dave Facer at the tackle spots. Junior Mike Roberts will likely be at the other defensive end. Matt Austad, Todd Murdock and Paul Harold will handle the linebacking chores with help from Jim Bacholor. Mike Trujillo will return to a cornerback position along with Eric Nalder. Several of the defensive players will also see action on the offensive line as well. Shoop and Brimhall will hold down tackle Although several of his players will go both ways, it is not an ideal situation, according to Hansen. The more different players you can get into the game, the better off you are, so we hope to bring a few more kids along as the season progress to fill some of these spots, he said. Offensively, look for a bal- anced attack with equal amounts of passing and running from . Layton. Brian Bailey is the likely candidate for the quarterbacking job.
