Show I 5B Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1983 Even Skeptics Agree; Davis Favored to Repeat By KENT SOMERS Review Sports Editor KAYSVILLE Even Davis Coach Ward Sawley admits it. Yes, he too would have to pick the Darts as favorites to win the Region Four championship again. But before Davis High is handed the 1983 Region Four cham- pionship trophy, lets play the Devils Advocate and examine this promising Dart team. DA: First of all, let me ask you about their seniors. Are they any good? 220-poun- Answer: Youre going to have to do better than that. The Darts not only return several letter-meseveral schools do that, but these returning lettermen played a large part in the Darts 1982 region championship season. Guys like Jeff Sampson, Ryan Smith, Jeff Hammer and I could go on for awhile, were instrumental in the Darts success. DA: O.K., so the front line of the senior class in strong. Ill give you that. But does the senior class have much depth? Answer: Now thats a much better question. No, the senior class doesnt have much depth. Coach Ward Sawley admits that. But Davis didnt have much depth last year when they started a couple tons worth of juniors. But Dart coaches are already concerned about injuries. One player, whom Sawley wished to remain namelss, is suffering from a shoulder injury. Its like Sawley said, injuries to even a couple of key players can make the difference in a team having a winning or a losing year. DA: O.K., what about leadern, ship? Answer: At Davis? Are you kidding? We depend on senior leadership, said Sawley. And his senior class rarely lets him down. Youre questions are slip- - Answer: Not big at all. Samp- son, who weighs all of 203 pounds, is the biggest lineman. He and Greg McNabb will play both offensive and defensive tackle for the Darts. Playing offensive guard for the Darts will be seniors Sean Kilgrow, Jimmy Larkins and Robert Reid. Chris Stevenson will play tight end. None of those players are big, but they are quick. DA: You mentioned Sampson. I remember hearing that name last year, but I pictured him as a d tackle. You say hes only 203 pounds. Is he really that good? Answer: Yes, hes that good. True, hes too small to play in the line at college, But he tears high school linemen apart. Heres how Sawley describes him. Hes quick and has strong legs and hips. Hes intelligent and reads well and has good lateral movement. What more could you want from a tackle? DA: How about the offensive backfield? Is there any speed there? Answer: Decent speed, but Sawley admits there are no sprinters there. But Davis players understand the concepts of the double-win- g offense, and its backs know how to running block and how to read those blocks. Steve Sargent, a senior, will quarterback the Darts this year after backing up Rick Iasi year. He will be backed by reserve quarterbacks Casey Lloyd and Greg Norton, both juniors. All three Davis quarterbacks played well in last weeks practices, said Sawley. Smith and Hammer both saw considerable action last year, as did split end Mark Miller and Mike Woodward. DA: How about the Darts defense, I mean besides McNabb and Sampson. Is it going to be as good as last years? Answer: Probably. Rick Francis and Marc Cooper have a chance to start next year in the ping. DA: All right, how about size. How big is Davis offensive and defensive lines? Se-cri- , line along with the other seniors we have mentioned. At the in- side linebacker position, the Darts will play Stevenson and Hammer. Woodward and Smith will play the outside positions. Andy Keck, Randy Smith, Sargent and Miller will constitute the Darts secondary much of the time. DA: Sargent is going to play defense too? Isnt that dangerous for a quarterback. Answer: Davis quarterbacks are required to be rugged, said Sawley. One of the first things we teach them is how to block, Hes a running Sawley said. back for us and another block- st Darts 1983 Schedule Aug. 26 Davis at Weber 7:30 p.m. Sept. 2 Ben Lomond at Davis 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 Clearfield at Davis 7:30 p.m. Sept. 16 Davis at East 5:00 p.m. Sept. 23 Davis at Woods Cross 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 Bountiful at Davis 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 (Wed.) Ole Ward Sawley doesnt have any juniors m . ' ..Vs! S3K . - ' " t-- S' f ? v' ' '... v 'v 4 ' , '' ,V ' f" I s does he? Answer: I knew I would get you on that one. Sawley is impressed with his juniors, to say the least. Heres how he describes them. Weve got so much depth. The junior defensive line will average We have kids the size of 4 and the potential to be over 220 pounds. Sawley also said he has some juniors who are now ready to push his seniors and that is always healthy for a football team. DA: How about the schedule? Combine a competitive region and a returning champion thats favored to win the championship again and youll come up with upsets. Answer: Its true, everyone will be after Davis this year. It would be quite an accomplishment to beat the Darts. Even Sawley arees that it will be tougher to win the title this year. But remember, if the Darts stay healthy they are an improved team. Davis will open the season this Friday at Weber High. Sawley said he didnt know much about the Warriors this year or what their new coach, Rod Buckwoldt, offensive or defensive plans were so the Darts face the unkown Friday. DA: Youve almost proven your point. But I have one last pessimistic question. Davis won the region title last year, losing only one game in regular season play. The Darts are heavily favored again this year. Does this affect the teams practices? Are the players taking it easy, thinking theyve won already? Answer: Ill let Sawley answer that in his own words. We are further ahead this year than weve ever been. 6-- 4, 6-- 5. 6-- like senior Ryan Smith to try and bring Region Four title.
