On July 19, at 7 p.m. in the school board administration building, parents and other nterested individuals can give their input on the direction of the school districts policy. They can let their desires and concerns help mold the change. It is, as board member Bruce Parry said, an exciting time, a time when the school district can formulate a progressive educational philosophy. But before parents bring their ideas to the board, they should Letter Policy The Lakeside Review encourages letters to the editor as a way of allowing citizens to speak out. Some things to consider when talking to the school sense accusing and pointing fingers. Regardless to what you hear, money does make the education system run. True, money will not make your child smarter but it will buy quality teachers and teaching aids which will. Its one thing to demand that every student get quality time on a computer, its another to pay for it. Know what your idea will cost. 6.- ) Be willing to give of yourself. You want the education system to change, but what ab- board are: Check the fact. It may have sounded great when your friend from another state told you about the way they do things in their school district, but is it really that great? How do their students compare nationally? Are the students more prepared for college or technical school? What are their ACT or SAT scores? Dont claim certain programs are ideal for students unless you have the figures to back up the statement. 2.- ) Be willing to compromise. Remember that the school system is public and must be used for the publics good. If you stand to hard on one point, you 1.- ) out yourself? Many student problems can be traced to attitude and environment problems at home. Are you willing to pick up the slack in any new may find yourself standing alone. Be willing to look at the program started? 7.- ) Write the board prior to the meeting. Give them the chance to digest your ideas. They wont be unfamiliar with you when you stand at the meet- other side. Work some ideas together and create a hybrid. 3.- ) Be brief. There are more ideas than yours and other people will want the board to know theirs. Show your ability to master the English language by getting to the point in a short statement. Rambling and repeating will only get people angry at you and your ideas. 4.- ) Be gracious. There is no ing and they will know what questions to ask. It is indeed an exciting time for education. I really dont know what else the city could have done to get the cemetery better prepared. We are not personally acquainted with these workers but do feel the aforementioned letter was inappropriate and unfair to some dedicated people. Allan and Colleen Fechser Kaysville Dear Review Editor: We were shocked by Gene Bloomfields attack on the City Cemetery and its workers. We have occasion to observe the cemetery and its care nearly every day. The city workers take great pride and care in the appearance of the cemetery; every gravestone had been carefully the lawn was hand-trimme- manicured and green and beautiful just prior to Memorial Day.
