Show 2B Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, Mar, 9, 1983 Davis Wins First Round, Braves, Fakons to Meet By SHERIUN ROWLEY - Review Correspondent SALT LAKE CITY The 1983 girls state tournament started Monday night at Westminster College and as the buzzer sounded to end the first game between Clearfield and West Jordan the tournament claimed its first upset. The Jaguars entered the tour- nament as the fourth place team out of region three and Falcons the first place team out of region one. So as the odds makers would say, the Falcons were a five point better team. Well, someone forgot to tell the Jaguars as they came from behind to nip the Falcons at the final gun. This game had some very fine play on both teams part, but far and away was the play of Elise Ipson, the fine forward for the Falcons. Elise finished the seemed to be with the Jaguars. As the fourth quarter started so did RayeLynn Hayes for the Falcons. She not only set up the plays but continually drove the weak side for the easy layup. game with high scoring honors with 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but it was her play that kept the Falcons in this game. The Falcons had the early lead as they showed no tournament jitters and found themselves with a seven point lead to end the first quarter. They extended their lead to the second quarter and looked to have the game under control. When the second half started the Falcons found a lid had been placed on their basket and for the Jaguars it seemed anything they put up went in. West Jordan started to run a high and low post and continually got the ball inside to their big girls and Clearfield seemed unable to stop them. As the third quarter came to an end the game was knotted at all-arou- 37 She seemed to be everywhere getting the steals, getting the breaks going or going inside. Our defense was the key tonight, said Coach Margo Jones of Clearfield. We never played any. It seemed as if we were just standing around a lot watching the game go by. West Jordans team was a little more ready to play than we were. , Clearfields next opponent will be the Braves from Bountiful who lost to the Colts from Cottonwood. In this game it was a case of never having played in a state tournament that cost the Braves the game. Both teams were shaky as it took over four minutes before either team could score a point. Then Cottonwood got eight points to the Braves two as the quarter ended. Again Bountiful just didnt shoot the ball and found themselves getting farther behind as Cottonwood doubled themselves to get the biggest lead of the at half. game, When the Braves came out for the second half they finally started putting the ball up. With three minutes gone in all and the momentum 16-- 8 'A'.' , ( the quarter Bountiful had fought back to within one point, But then they fell back into not shooting again and the as Colts pulled out ahead, the third quarter ended. The Colts found they couid go inside on the Braves more in the final eight minutes and got up 9 before Bountiful could get a shot to fall. 14-1- 3. 23-1- j 9 BOUNTIFUL has come into the girls tournament with little post season play.
