Show REPORT OP OF THE NATIONAL BUREAU OF EDUCATION the last number of the report of the bureau of education at washington c compiled ur arder der the direction ot of hon dorman B eaton the commissioner ot Edu education catin lately resigned contains valuable and interesting statistics of the condition of public bublic education in an all the states aal and territories of the union the volume is worthy of a careful perusal by all who have charge of the training ot of the youth of both sexes I 1 in this case however we have only space to mention the favorable standing a warded awarded to utah la in this report leport of national education covering cojei ing the period from 1884 to 1885 ahe the following statistics were the same as given by L john nuttall territorial Supe Sup risten erlsten dent of schools in his annual report no of youth between between 6 and 18 years yeara I 1 teachers amount of expenditure for public schools M 8 value of school property propel proper ty tv ad R percent of school youth enrolled 5 24 t in attendance average number of days in school there was an increase of 1740 school youth and of for public schools over the two preceding years in referring to the foregoing summary the 6 commissioner missioner orn reports the general condition of education in utah as denoting progress in most respects and he says further informs information tion goes to show ghow that the p public ablia school system in utah more than holds its own per for sustaining the public ac schools bools there was received from state and local taxation this added to the revenue from other sources sources with the balance on hand netted an aa income of being over in excess of all expenditures new buildings were erected at a cost of improvements and repairs wre were made costing and furniture purchased at in ie referring deferring to the want of secondary or high schools in the Terri territory tor the commissioner remarked school OT districts having a population ot 1200 or more may by popular vote es establish and maintain graded schools or graded departments depart mento of schools where pupils over eighteen years of age way may be instructed in branches higher than those these taught in common or primary schools none such however nave been reported to tins this bureau the university of el deseret is reported in this volume as affording superior instruction to youth of both sexes 8 a as s having added a year to its scientist tit linc le course new studies having been put in the curriculum former studies extended with the power of conferring the degree of B with dip diploma larni upon graduates from rem the entire course and kits felts general standard has been raised A series of lectures is given upon the elements of law ment the course in civil government and political economy thase lee letares tures being intend as preliminary to the final establishment of A a complete law department part ment in connection with the university ver sity in regard to special instruction by the territory the education of the deaf comes in for a favorable mention it is as follows A circular from the president of the university of deseret dated september 1884 states that session ot of the legislature an ampro A of 2000 annually for two years was voted to aid in in connection with the university a department part ment for the education of the diat deaf mutes the circular shows that thai the matter was promptly acted upon by the officers of the university and that in 1884 5 instructors from the east tz had been secured and arrangements made tor for the reception of such each deaf mutes as need instruction and are found to be ba pre prepared parea for entrance on the courso course projected further will naturally come in the report for 1885 86 8 |
