Many people attempted to mine gold from the gravel in the GreenRiver. Hansen is convinced Morgan was one of them. Im convinced he came down the river from Green River, Wyoming with a bunch of Chinese workers," said Hansen. My research indicates the Chinese workers were supposed to come to Carbon County to work sifter they left the canyon but no one ever saw them. I dont know what happened to them. Hansen located a flat bottomed wooden boat and two oars on a later trip that had been stashed across the river from the cowboy cache. It had been lifted up out of the water level and stashed out of the way, he said. Im sure it was Morgans boat. The boat had been lined with tar to keep it from leaking, Hansen explained. BLM officials are trying to find a home for the historic coat It doesnt fit the mission statement of the College of Eastern Utah Prehistoric Museum and an attempt to donate it to the Helper museum has been put on hold. BLM archaeologist Blaine Miller said BLM officials proposed to remove the entire cache and place it in the Helper Museum. That idea raised a cry from river runners who eryoyed visiting the site. We wanted it left right there as a piece of history," said Hansen. We enjoyed stopping there as part of our trips. I realize fishing is important - we all eryoy recreation," stated Matthews. But one of the biggest concerns facing us is adequate water in the community to enable the county to develop. The fish have survived a lot of years without the DWR buying the water. Where do we draw the line? Where do we start looking at the survival of human, not just endangered species? In addition to pressing water matters, the former elected official expressed concern regarding the negative effects the recently approved railroad merger may have on the mining industry and smaller businesses not only in Carbon County, hut, throughout the state. I am glad the local area got trackage rights, but I worry about the mergers impacts," said Matthews. Railroad employee could lose their jobs or be forced to transfer to other areas. We dont really know what will happen yet. Addressing last Novembers state and national election, the former Utah representative confirmed being disappointed by the results in the 3rd Congressional District race. Bill Orton did a good job for rural Utah - balance promotes better legislation, stressed Matthews. Its a shame people voted against Bill Clintons national monument rather than voting for the person. No one, not even Orrin Hatch or Bob Bennett, could have stopped the designation." Discussing the future, Matthews emphasized that he anticipates remaining active in the local political arena and the Carbon County Democratic Party. The former state representative did not indicate he plans to run for elected office again, but he did not rule out the possibility. I dont know what the next two years will bring, remarked Matthews. There will be several seats opening on county and state governments, but I dont know if I will want to run for elected office in two years." . I appreciate the opportunity I have had to help the people in Carbon and Emery counties at the Legislature, concluded Matthews. I encourage residents to continue to talk to their legislators. I urge local voters to contact Mike Dmitrich or Brad ; King with their problems and concerns. Matthews recalls serving: 8 warrant court-issue- d 6:30 p.m. Jan. 6. The comments indicate that unimproved roads and slow, stop and go traffic have more of a negative affect than traffic on paved roads. DWR officials believe that if the company goes ahead with its preferred alternative, it will almost completely displace the elk herd and severely reduce the deer herd numbers. The comments indicate the portion of the EIS dealing with raptor nests is incomplete and should be reworked. The letter also indicates that projected impacts on endangered fish in the Colorado River have not been thoroughly examined. high-spee- d V EIS: Increases in selenium or salinity in the Price River could make the Price River unsuitable habitat for endangered fish. Water quality impacts need additional analysis or clarification, it states. DWR and Utah Department of Natural Resources officials are pushing River Gas to not drill any wells in the GCWA. Information gathered by Utah Geological Survey officials indicates there is very little if any coal beneath the area in question. They are hoping River Gas will agree with their assessment and also agree not to drill in the critical habitat. No agreement has yet been reached in the matter, according to officials familiar with the negotiations. 3 Cl acao 3Q,Qma2D -- - , 50 ally disappearing.
