Show Salina Sun Wednesday. May 14. 1997 Page 12 Double Region 13 track championships! to the top Wolf Women show no mercy Wolves take it byJoLynCamp SlalT writer North Sevier ath letes dominated the Region Track Meet at South Sevier High School on Saturday May 10th. Conditions were beautiful and the crowd was out in force to watch the Wolfteamsannihilate the competition. The eight-teatrack meet rendered points to NSHS in literally every event. Everyone who has followed the NSHS Wolf Women in track over the years know oftheirrelentless tradition. Led by Coach Jill Porter, they have taken region for the past 10 out of years. They are the defending state champion for three years straight. The trad it ion held strong for them on Saturday, also. The Wolf Women had an unbeatable start. The 3200 meter run began the momentum with 22 points gained largely by Allison and Jenny Sperry. By the time the field events were finished in the morning, the team total was 96 points. They had taken the gold in all of the events but the shot put, placing second there. Top fmishers were Cassie Christensen, Krista Lindsay, Ann m 1 1 weeks earlier in the season due to a pulled muscle which seemed to give her no trouble at region. Shadoe Shaheen powered her way to golds in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Cassie Sheffield, sophomore, and Britania Mickelsen, freshman, both young runners ran strong in the 400 meter dash. The North Sevier ladies owned the relay events as they swept all three victories. Their flawless handoffs edged out any would-b- e competitors. The last event of the day, 4X400 meter relay, was indicative of the whole day as the Wolf Women sailed past the finish line with an unapproachable 70 yard lead. These girls are great competitors. Before the race Shadoe Shaheen was saying how she hated the 300 meter hurdles because they are so exhausting, yet a few minutes later she was driving through them with a passion for the win. Coach Jill Porter said of both the girls and the boys teams, A lot of credit goes to the sixteen seniors who led the way. Also, individual performances received an extra boost as an exhilarating roar would clamor from the fans in the grandstand each time a NSHS athlete passed. The runners said the fans were great contributors to their success. Launa Learning, Braithwaite. HollyTaylor,Marci Eppich and Shadoe Shaheen. Still with this commanding lead, the Wolf Women didn't back off. They went on to dominate in all of the run ning events. Launa Learning led the way in the sprint events with a total of stated, four golds. Launa had to set out for two a rush! I love the crowd cheering. Pole The boys track program is up and com ing as they also took region for the second year in a row. As did the girls, the boys proved themselves as a force to be reckoned with from the onset. The 3200 meter run gained the first nine points with Ira Mickelsen and Jacob two events, ran the 800 meter placing and qualifying for state. A disappointment for the Wolves was when Dustin Jensen was disqual ified in the finals for a false start in the 00 meter dash as he had the third fastest time in the trials. This will not hurt them at state next week, however, because Dustin has already qualified for state in the 100 meter at a previous meet. The relays for the boys generated more points as well as a record. The 4X 00 meterrelay shattered the school record and gained the first victory in years over San Juans team. However, they also suffered a disqualification in the 600 meter medley relay when they didnt make a clean baton exchange. Fortunately, the medley relay team had Kjarplacing. The fie Id events captured another 43 total to points to raise the seven-eve52 points. Adam Hales raised his personal best in the shot put as did Matt Blake in the javelin. Chet Heath, a sophomore, showed that he has potential with personal bests in both the high jump and long jump finishing second and fifth respectively. At least two Wolves qualified as finalists in each of the dash event trials. Th is put the Wolves well on their way also qualified for state previously to the victory.
