Sirens were blaring in Salina at 6:10 a.m. Thursday morning as all of the emergency departments were called out to a rollover 14 A family, in a passenger car, miles east on travel ing from Rio Grande, Texas to Washington, careened off the freeway when the driver, Maria Villalon (58), fell asleep. The car rolled over crush ing the hood and eventual ly stopped right side up with the driver's side lodged Mrs. Villalons againstthehillsideandaboulder. grandson, Robert (9), was reclined sleeping in the front passengers seat and her son, Joe (34), was in the back. First on the scene at 5:30 a m. was Brett Gates, a truck driver . He said that all he noticed as he approached was a man sitting by the guardrail. Thecaronly looked likearock. The man. Joe Villalon. had been asleep at the time of the crash and had crawled out the back window when the car stopped. By the time the fire department arrived at approximately 6:30 a.m., other passers-b- y had stopped to help by covering the trapped people with blankets and reassuring them. Officer Billy Hales was attendingto Mr. Villalon. The EMT's arrived in the ambulance shortly thereafter. The mdn and women ofthe Salina area emergency team worked cooperatively and efficiently. As the firemen utilized the JawsofLife equipment to cut the metal and peel back the hood, the EMTs attended to the needs of the victims still pinned in the car. It took about 20 minutes to make an opening out of the front passenger door to extricate first the boy and then his grandmother. The boy was visibly chilled and shivering from the cool canyon breeze but was conscious and had no apparent injuries. Mrs. Villalon was given oxygen during the rescue and was in and out of consciousness. All those injured were put on back boards by 7. 5 a.m., loaded in the ambulance and transported to Sevier Valley Hospital. Maria Villalon was transferred laterto LDS Hospital. Joe was admitted to Sevier Valley Hospitaland Robert was released. Mrs. Villalon was the only one wearing her seat belt. Salina Council deals with Hatch, Blackham Johnson, many issues at regular session receive low marks from Utah Kids Coalition by Lora Peterson The SalinaCity Council held their meeting in the city library last Tuesday night, due to the Bond Election being held in City Chambers down stairs. Warren Forsyth was present to discuss the usage of the property he recently purchased. Forsyth states that UDOT presently has the only key to allow passage through his property to Highway 89. Forsyth expressed to the council that he had been to the County and theCounty sent him to the city. He stated I'm negotiating fiom ground zero. A letter in regards to Forsyth's request that it was illegal for UDOT to lock the gate, quoting legal statutes had been given to a council member, who expressed that he thought it was his per- Gordon Kiesel, the Chiefof Police for Salina City, is celebrating 32 years of loyal and dedicated service at an Open House held in his sonal copy.
