Show Age Doesnt Matter Americans surveyed know little about stroke warning signs Survey finds Americans know little about stroke, its warning signs, and prevention. In a recent survey Dallas, May of the general publics perceptions about stroke less than half of the respondents could name one warning sign of stroke -- - the nations third leading cause of death and leading cause of disability. The survey was commissioned by the American Heart Association. In addition to measuring the general publics understanding of stroke warning signals, the survey evaluated the publics perceptions of strokes effects, response and beliefs about responsibility for stroke. These survey results point to a critical lack of awareness and understanding among the general public about the severity of stroke (or brain attack) and how individuals can reduce their risk of having a stroke, says Suzanne Oparil, M.D., president of the American Heart Association. Some 43 percent of those surveyed did not know even one warning sign of stroke. According to the AHA, the warning signs associated with stroke are: Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body. Sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in one eye. Loss of speech or trouble talking or understanding speech. Sudden severe headaches with no apparent cause. Unexplained dizziness, unsteadiness or sudden falls, especially when combined with any previous symptoms. As for perceptions of strokes effects, 79 percent of people surveyed associate stroke with paralysis or weakening. However, other common effects of stroke ore: neglect of the recovering side, trouble understand1 ing speech, difficulty in talking or communicating, memory lapses and problems performing tasks. Only 29 percent of this surveyed would call 911 or go to an emergency room for unexplained dizzi- ness and lost vision on one eye that lasts more than 45 minutes. The AHA recommends that anyone experiencing stoke signs call an ambulance and get to a hospital as soon as possible to minimize brain injury. Heart attack and brain attack (or stroke) are diseases of the circulatory system caused by the blocking or rupturing of arteries, Oparil says. If an artery leading to the is blocked, a heart attack occurs. If the same thing happens in an artery leading to the brain, a brain attack occurs and brain cells begin to die within minutes. That is why immediate medical attention is crucial. While certain stroke risk factors such as age, gender and family history are uncontrollable, there are a number of risk factors that are con- trollable. says Oparil. Yet survey findings show less than half-- - 46 percent-- - of people surveyed believed Photos a On June 29, there will be a van trip for out of town shopping. Please provide us with Salina Seniors Unlike some cultures in our world, we have a tendency to feel negatively toward aging and, even at times, to have somewhat of a disregard for our aged people. ' Being a respector of the aged, having worked in service to the elderly at Richfield Care Center for most of my career, and being an advocate for the elderly in our society, I was pleased to run across some statistics that show age isnt always a factor in ones success or failure in life. Consider some of these examples: Actor George Bums won his first Oscar at 80. Golda Meir was 71 when she became prime minister of Israel. At age 96, playwright George Bernard Shaw broke his leg when he fell out of a tree he was trimming in his backyard. Painter Grandma Moses didnt start painting until she was 80 years old. She completed over 1,500 paintings after that; 25 percent of those were proi" duced when she was past 100. 71 when he was painted the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo Albert humanitarian and Schweitzer was still performing opPhysician erations in his African hospital at 89. Doc Counsilman, at 58, became the oldest person ever to swim the English Channel. S.I. Hayakawa retired as president of San Francisco State University at 70, then was elected to the U.S. Senate. Casey Stengel didnt retire from managing the New York Mets until he was 75. Hydration Important To The Elderly . Alzhiemers is no .laughing matter Safety, fbrmemory Impaired per sons ts everyone s concern. Memory loss, to most of us, is an in convenience and even a cause for humor. But its no joke to those affected Alzheimers disease. People with Alzheimers disease may become confused, even in their everyday surroundings. To regain control of their situation, many people with Alzheimers disease go in search of something reassuring, a behavior called wandering. Their behavior can put them in great danger. Theres no way to predict who will wander or when and how it might happen. The best advice is to be prepared. To enable police, community agencies and private citizens to identify' people with Alzheimers disease and help return them home, the Alzheimers Association SAFE RETURN program was created. The Alzheimers Association SAFE RETURN program provides: An identify bracelet or necklace, clothing labels and wallet cards to identify the memory impaired and Youre A Player. Phase 2 - Violence erupts -- - your partner may hit, slap, kick, choke, or throw objects. Your partner may use a weapon and is generally careful that there are no witnesses. Phase 3 - Your partner says he is sorry or acts guilty or ashamed. He may promise to get treatment or help, to never do it again, or to change. (The Honeymoon Stage) starts all over again. However, the next time your Phase 4 - Phase partner is violent or threatening, it will be much more severe. The first step in breaking a pattern of violence is to tell someone. As we age, the risk of dehydration increases - a condition which can be more critical in older people who already have a lower percentage of total body water. This reduces the tolerance to heat and regulation of body temperature, and with the hope of wanner weather coming to our area, drinking enough water becomes even more important. Consuming enough fluid is important for other reasons too: kidneys need more fluids in order to filter as efficiently as they used to. Water also helps maintain bowel regularity which is a very common concern in the elderly, and sufficient water does wonders for the skin. Older people shouldnt rely on thirst to indicate the need for a drink of water. Studies show that between the ages of 65 and 75 people may underesbecause older peoples timate their water requirements by as much as one-ha- lf decrease. to for taste plain water appears At Richfield Care Center adequate hydration for our residents is encouraged in various ways. Additional fluids are placed at bedsides and in common areas for easy access, fluids are offered during recreational activities and programs and nursed encourage more fluids with medications and during and contact - day and night. Nourishments and snacks which are offered regularly are often high fluid items that the residents enjoy and will ingest such as jello, popsicles, ice cream, sodas, floats, puddings, etc. Good hydration is important for all ages, but is becomes critical in the elderly. If you are the caretaker of an elderly person or elderly yourself, be sure to see that enough fluids are ingested everyday - it is conductive to good health.
