Dear Editor, Being a mother. stay-at-hor- spent such a nice day at the high school ball park last Saturday watching the 1 year old tournament in which one of my grandsons was participatI in. was really enjoying the games and was very proud of the sportsing I manship saw among the various players and fans throughout the day. At least until the championship game where the Gunnison Giants were faced against the Juab Marlins. The Gunnison team had been there since 9 a.m. They ended up playing five games being there over 13 hours with barely a break to grab a bite to eat in between games. These boys Im sure were very tired but they played like champions. That game ruined my whole day. The sportsmanship portrayed there by the Juab fans, who were grown up adults, was appalling to say the least. They threatened the umpire and the fans from Gunnison. They grumbled and complained about everything that happened. Ive never seen people act like that before. I think all of the Gunnison fans were a little afraid to even leave the ball park. So I say hats off to the Gunnison Giants, who after playing their hearts out in five games that day played like true champions and portrayed sportsmanship throughout the entire tournament. Even though they lost the game (in extra innings) they are number one in my eyes. They need to be commended for a job well done. You parents of these fine boys can feel very proud of your sons. A Proud Grandmother, Lapreal Olsen I Phone alternatives exist in Gunnison . June 28. 1 995 Im always looking for ways to save Last month I ran across a great one, and I was hoping you would share it with your readers. Living in the Gunnison area - everywhere you call is long distance. We spend anywhere from $50-- $ 20 every month in phone charges. I always do my best to make phone calls after hours and on weekends so that I get the best rates, but it doesnt seem to make much difference. Through the grape vine, I heard about a phone company called Excel Telecommunications. We went to a seminar in Provo that explained the company rates and policies. After having our phone bills analyzed, I was shocked at the price difference. Our phone bill was cut in thirds every month. After reading in the paper that the Gunnison Telephone Company was going Equal Access, I wanted to let as many people as possible know that there are other phone companies besides the Big 3 that advertise on television. Excel will be holding a meeting right here in Gunnison, on the 28th of June, at the City hall building at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is free to the public, and Excel representatives will be there to analyze any phone bill that you bring in. I would like to encourage anyone interested to attend this meeting. It will definitely be worth the time. In todays world every dollar earned is precious, and this is a very easy way to hold on to an extra few. Please call 528-38or 3210 if you want more information about Excel or their seminars. Thank you, Stephanie Olsen money. 1 43 It is cruel to let your dog run loose by Raili Taylor Some people think it is cruel to leave dogs penned or tied up, yet okay to let them wander freely. This is not true, dogs get into trouble. Would you allow your two year old to wander freely all over the neighborhood? There are alternatives to having a dog tied or penned up: you could fence your yard, take your dog for frequent walks, let it run while you supervise it, or keep it in the house. Letting your dog run loose is also giving it the right to be impounded, snatched, injured, or killed. In most cities it is illegal to let your dog run loose. Dogs caught running loose will be impounded. You will have to pay a fine before your dog is returned to you. Your dog could be stolen. Dog Snatchers steal dogs, then sell them. Stolen dogs are often never seen again. Poison bait is often placed out to kill unwanted pests. Dogs frequently get into this, poisoning themselves. Dogs get into trash cans, where they can eat poisonous items or cut themselves on broken glass.
