Show SOUTHERN california sax SAN dirgo DIEGO california april 1897 elder E H nye president of the california mission in company with his wife and five elders arrived in the southern california conference and the party was joined at los angeles by elders laboring in that city and vicinity reaching here here april where everything was in in readiness for regular semiannual conference which convened april at zo 10 a m three meetings were held with a larger attendance than at any previous conference after opening exercises elder P T wright president of the conference conle rence now released to return home made welcoming remarks and reported the conference in a prosperous condition he stated that the morning and afternoon services would be devoted to reading general reports by elders from the various fields which plan was carried out elders J D irvine and W C horsley who had bad been laboring in san diego and los angeles respectively reported that difficulty had been experienced in getting people to the balls which condition had suggested street preaching as a direct means of preaching the gospel and an indirect way ot of filling the halls on sundays the suggestion had been carried out and street meetings had proved successful sf ul large intelligent audiences approaching the hundreds had listened with profound and respectful attention and the fruits had been manifest in the disappearance of much prejudice and the acquisition of many friends some baptisms were directly attributable to this class of i work elders german E ellsworth and G T hardsog Har whose labors for the past six months bad been confined mostly to orange and san diego counties respectively ively where they had traveled without purse and scrip made very flattering reports relative to the mode of traveling pursued As they journeyed from town to town appointing and holding meetings they were usually received with consideration and sympathy sufficient to prevent them from suffering for necessities they were elated over their experiences I 1 elders charles brown J S berry E A bushman john Y smith willard and E M whitesides whitesides made reports which were satisfactory and gratifying as was also those of the previous speakers each report was chat char by a powerful testimony divinity of the cause represented the general church authorities were sustained as were the mission authorities and officers J T D irvine was appointed to succeed P T wright as conference president and miss louise edwards received the appointment ot of cerk A large and attentive audience g greeted reet us in the evening to hear bear elder eider nye on prophecies fulfilled he quoted prophecies from revelations malachi ind and isaiah relative to the restoration appearing of the savior to his temple the gathering of israel and the establishing ot of the mountain ot of the lords and with invincible their literal fulfillment by facts connected with the history of the church of f jesus christ of latter day saints A brsus commendable feature of the conference was the duets and solos so well rendered by sisters wright weight cooper and brothers and smith A very delightful sociable was given in one of the targe large balls on the evenin evening of th the e 2 thab by the local saints and ef elders sta stationed faey here in which they and their friends and visiting elders participated with genuine enjoyment oa monday the a priesthood meeting was held in which excellent instructions were given and the following appointments to fields of labor made elders Elder sJ JW W irvine I 1 W nixon and thomas urie los angeles city elders j L S berry and A G J bowman los angeles county elders G hard harding 1119 john Y smith and E A bushman SM san diego city elders charles brown and alvin benson san diego county elders german E ellsworth and W C horsley santa ana orange county elders E M whitesides and william lunt ventura Veo tura ventura county louise EDW EDWARDS ARbS |
