Show THE BLUE GRASS STATE CANTON kentucky A february 14 p about two months ago I 1 sent a letter to your paper which you were kima acia j enough to publish by the which 1 I aaa encouraged to write again 1 I often dabble with pen and ink baik but methinks I 1 never sent a communication so far from home before it must inde indeed be that distance lends enchantment at any rate I 1 have to tell you that my day cam i less little letter already has brought me y pleasure in in quantity an hundred fald fol foldoe dod v in a way I 1 am sure I 1 never could have dreamed it lound found for foe me not only n ner er sc friends but actually unknown celiku ves 4 f in the town of smithfield utah thaw 4 adding to a regard already entertained entertain ek f an interest which is fairly unspeakable A correspondence and friendship al of course has sprung up between us which is highly entertaining and I 1 hope destined to last my letter also came under the notice of my relatives in malad idaho of st whom I 1 spoke as well as other far west friends several of whom were thought ful enough to send me a copy of d the NEWS surely the pen is a wonderful medium mightier than the sword as some out one has said it is also said that it is the w expected that always happens which wack and notice aUr is s my experience most so in this instance of a few brief lines sent to the news we have had but one spell of zero weather in kentucky this winter and the weather now is bright and lovely however in this climate we expect bad weather during much ot of march farmers are burning plant land lor for tobacco and buyers of last year years Is crop are quite numerous the prices they give range from i to 5 per pounds for un prized or loose tobacco quite acome down since twenty years ago when it sold for 5 to xo 10 per ico pounds tobacco is our farmers main stay for f money wherewith to purchase the necessaries es of life many here are able to live comfortably some can barely live at all while the gulf between the very rich and very poor is deep and wide many have no work to do something appears to be wrong and those who would attribute the unsettled and miserable state of affairs to the di of a divine providence are drifting into infidelity in religion old forms and many established notions are losing their hold upon the people and denominations and combinations are disintegrating we have many different religious de nominations five of which are depre dented in our town of inhabitants there are a few mormons cormons in this county but I 1 have never met any of them the elders come to our town once or twice a year generally generall yand and would preach in our union church if they were permitted to do so by the way that wor dunion word union seems to me to be a mis nomer the elders preached here once on the street one thing I 1 have observed is that mormon elders keep good company or none A good many deop people le in this county believe in their doctrine but do not join the church our rich and educated people are hardest down on mormons cormons Mor mons but but as was said of one many years ago the common people hear them gladly A ki kinsman asman ot of mine says he never speaks to me but that I 1 say something about the mormons cormons before I 1 get through one J day he spoke of them without my as distance si stance he said of some one that he was a regular mormon I 1 asked him what he meant by that and he replied why the fellow believes in having more than one wife 1 I just as I 1 expected that is what some people vainly imagine mormonism to be not knowing its its principles I 1 will close my letter and give you a i rest after I 1 tell you where to look on your maps to had find me canton is is in in western Xen kentucky tucky on cumberland river 1 which runs north parallel with the tennessee river the entire width of the t state we keep the postoffice post office here I 1 send a glad greeting to all who may read this MRS NORA MAJOR |
