Show OBITUARY NOTES EDWARD PHILLIPS once more an alloise creator has called unto himself one of his children whose fidelity and good works have entitled him to the celestial reward of the righteous an inheritance in the kingdom of god with immortality and eternal life at on the morning of tuesday december 1 1896 the spirit of brother edward Phil chillios lios quitted its earthly tabernacle and went home to the god who sent it into this sphere ot of probation the end was calm and peaceful the angel of death wakened him from his hia slumbers with a gentle touch and beckoned him to follow he was ill but a few hours during the night and in the early arly morning he fell apparently into a natural condition of peaceful sleep but in that sleep his bis eyes closed upon all earthly scenes and his soul was wafted wafred on wings ot of eternal love to its glorious future home edward phillips was a son of william and mary phillips and was born in ox nail Gloucester shire england on the 2nd and day of april 1813 while he was yet an infant his parents parent removed to worcestershire where the gospel of jesus christ reached him and where on march 16 1840 he received the ordinance of baptism under the hands of president wilford fl during the next year he WOE was ordained to the and priesthood and spent hie hi time in preaching the gospel and in pa residing over two branches ol of the S church hurch he emigrated to america in 1841 arriving in nauvoo in the fall of that year on august he married hannah simmons the wife who has faith faithfully t ally stood by him through the vicissitudes of pioneer life and who is left to mourn his departure brother phillips was a member ot of the nauvoo legions legion and during the severe trials which culminated in the he martyrdom of the prophet and the expulsion of the saints from ill illinois i nois he was active in doing what was in his power to sustain his brethren and sisters and later when the departure of the mormon battalion babalion Ban alion took from the exiled saints saint their young and able bodied men leaving women and ct c ildren almost destitute he was one who noted acted as an proLe protector ator and supporter of the widows and father of the fatherless he made his home in council bluffs until 1849 when he came to utah in captain orson oroon spen berss company that same winter he came up into davis da vis county in search of a place to make a home and in the spring ot of 1860 1850 he located in what is in now kaysville Kays ville being the second man to establish himself there he has ever since been a resident of that place has reared a large family and has won the undying res and admiration of his neighbors neighbor and acquaintances who now honor his hi memory it is sufficient to say isay of him that he was a good husband and father an honorable man and a tried true and consistent latter day saint he was the father of 18 children 12 of whom survive him his grandchildren number an even one hundred 79 of whom are living and he leaves 8 grandchildren great he died at the age of 88 years 7 months month and 29 days day H BLOOD MARY MART ANN RAINE RIDGE HAZEN mary ann bainbridge hazen who died on the of november 1896 at her home in on ward salt bait lake county ot typhoid fever was waa the daughter of samuel bainbridge and elizabeth allan was born nov 28 at newcastle on tyne england she sh was baptised baptized sed by elder bider robert gillies in the year 1852 her mother being then a widow and over 70 years old was also baptized she was married to elder bider robert hazen on the of august 1853 and left newcastle march 26 1856 accompanied by her husband and an infant daughter and her aged mother bound for salt lake city to make her home among the saints her aged mother died and was burled buried at in the autumn of 1858 in the spring of 1859 sifter blister hazen left belleville illinois with her husband and child and taking asage usage by steamer from ste st louis lou in U florence lorence arrived early in april a and cross edthe plains in feramorz For amors lit little to company which arrived in salt let lake e city on sept 10 1859 two days day later she lobe moved over the jordan river where she has lived continuously up to the he time of her death she was the mother of seven children two sons son and five daughters her two sons son and one daughter survive her her son samuel B having started on a mission to tc the indian territory on the of october one week after his mother was stricken with typhoid fever she also leaves leave eight grandsons grandsons rand sons and eight granddaughters granddaughter her er husband and a host of kind and ana sympathizing friends who mourn her dv departure she was the first president 0 the relief society of brighton ward be ing appointed sept 2 1875 and acting a president until released by death sh was also a faith faithful fal teacher in the sun san day school for years yeam she was earnest quiet humble unassuming cheerful over ever iid kind but never complaining she was waa a true faithful wife an mother and an undeviating friend pews peace and rest beloved one farewell I 1 B R H JACOB HOUTZ doe dec 14 one more of good old pioneers has gone to his final rest this last last one is jacob houtz one of the early founders ot of springville Spring ville last friday dec lith he breathed his last the cause being extreme old age he was just eighty two years of age was an ambitious hardworking hard working man A few months ago the sickness which finally proved his last look hold of him several hundred people attended the funeral services serviced in the meeting house and a long line ot of mourners followed the remains to 10 the cemetery oem eiery on the hill the principal speakers st ai the services were elders frank john and phillip boyer and charles evans they all spoke in high praise of the respected dead pioneer elder evans especially bore a powerful testimony jacob houtz was born in pennsylvania in 1814 he gave up nearly all his property properly forsook friends and kindred and went west with his family to gather with wih the mormons cormons in early times ide he reached utah in Se pember 1847 six weeks after afier the pioneer band entered these valleys later on he fulfilled missions to germany and parts of the untied united states stales the deceased was the father ot of mrs mary E snow wife of president lorenzo snow was grandfather of M L Snow editor of the brigham city bug bugler er also of mrs E R H peirce mrs virginia stephen miss birdie snow mrs ada williams Wiil iaus and mrs minnie nugent all of salt bait lake city and all of w hom bom were present at the funeral services A READER w s W S muir who was among the first settlers ettler of bountiful departed this life friday afternoon nov and was buried on tuesday deceased had just returned from an extensive trip through idaho and southern utah where he had been bishing his children and the people whom he had been the means of bringing into the church while on a mission when lie he was taken down with pneumonia he was sick in bed about a week the funeral services were held in the west bountiful meeting house houe prest frest ross hess elders robert patrick thomas dobson john W taylor and bishop grant gram were the speakers deceased was barnon born on july 19 1822 at bannockburn scotland about thirty miles from glasgow in his early life he iwa had a hard struggle straggle wo working riLing from early moru morn until late at night getting but two hours schooling each night after his days work had been completed he was a by trade january let 1844 he married jane stewart bobb both having joined the church about a year before their marriage ri adv the same year they emigrated to nauvoo in march 1846 he lefi lef for winter quarters where he enlisted in the mormon battalion Ba italien and made the famous march to los angeles on foot a great deal of the way barefooted the lall fall of JW 1848 he returned to council bluffs where he met his wife and to which place in the meantime she had moved in 1849 the family moved to these valleys and the following year to bountiful which has ever since been his home in the spring of 1855 he left for scotland on a miss mission i on returning the year of the move south mouth he went to ft supply to start a colony there and was la in the morrisine Morri site troubles in 1862 1864 he took a trip to great britain in I 1 1887 to gather genealogy he was the first postmaster at woods cross croas where he served for twelve years I 1 in june 1895 he was ordained a patriarch he was a faithful and zealous member ot of the church ever trying to do his duty he leaves twenty one children seven ty two grand and three great grand children to mourn his loss losa TAME JAMES james eldest son of john and elizabeth atkinson was born nov 8 1828 in Buck buckden den langster dale yorkshire england he spent his time until early manhood in service on the farm being ot of an observing and practical turn ot of mind he plainly saw 89 w that unless an effort was put forth to 10 change the conditions by which he was surrounded his course in lite would be run in the same channel as those who had gone before him and thai in old age he be would still be an he was in youth a ae dependent pendent upon others under those these circumstances his bis mind naturally turned toward america the land where he believed he could by indus ry and perse severance verenie ve renoe become free and independent his course was wan in consequence in this direction and while striving to bring about a realization of his hopes be in he mouth month of march 1849 heard the gos pel preached by elder eider richard cranshaw recognizing the vol voice 1 ce of the true shepard he became convinced at once ot of the g genuineness genuine nuin eness of the teach he received and havink having saved enough money he in the following lowing lol january bade goodbye to his aged parents and shipped to now new orleans one lealure feature connected with hi leaving home and which he often related to his children and others was the request of his old mother that under every circumstance he should keep good company he made her a promise that he would and it was one 00 of the chief aims of his life to keep that promise sacred on arriving at new orleans he with the company of saints started at once toward the west reaching kanesville Kanes ville he entered into imo an arrangement to run a farm but before the summer was over the agreement came to an end and he joined thomas williams company and crossed the plains arriving in bait lake city november 1860 1850 he immediately sought baptism at the hands of eider edward Ste stevenson veaon in the spring of 1851 he went to grants villo ville and was among the original lo locators caters of that place and since that time has made it his home his means and his energies have been expended in the development and building up of the town in 1854 he went back to bring a company of saints in and it was in this company that he first met mary leishman whom he married in 1857 in 1856 he was called to go to carson valley in company with the late orson oraon hyde christopher layton and others here he assisted in performing the work assigned them in that place he returned the following year and commenced laying the foundation of his future home in 1868 he was again called to cross the plains and traveled in captain Mum fords company he being assistant captain and commissary he also did much service in the early settlement of these valleys in defending the settlements against indian attacks etc in 1882 he was called to take a mission to his native land and performed a good work while there 0 oher her positions have been hold held by him during his service in the church and for many years prior to his death was a member of the high council in tooele thoele stake during his life he his has succeeded through his thrift and industry in accumulating considerable of this worlds goods good and always deemed it a privilege to render any assistance required of him aum in the building of tern tem plea and in advancing the work of god although his time was wa largely occupied with the carem and annoyances attending the handling of ia a large bubines bu sines it was always alway a pleasure to him to converse with his friends and neighbors upon the beauties of the gospel it was his hie aim to secure for himo himself self and so far as he was able for his children an eternal salvation and he endeavored to work on such lines as would bring about that result he was naturally of a quiet and unassuming disposition and by many of his acquaintances was comparatively unknown while to those who know knew him and were in his confidence the goodness of his nature was understood and his worth appreciated he had the humility of it a achl child id an and d a heart that was as lender lander as an that of a woman he was always loyal to the priesthood and held as sacred Its ais power and authority in all james was a strength among the people and he carried with him han an influence for good although he has had gone his goodness good will uve live and be b kept frh fresh in the minds ot of many people one ot of the last sob ao fc of his life was to set met aside a fund of 1000 to be hold held in trul by the bishop ot of krants vilie the interest thereof to 10 be devoed to the benefit of the poor of the ward forever he has had four four wives three of whom have gone before him in each instance leaving a family ol of small emall children he had been in feeble health for many years past and had it not been for his indomitable will would have succumbed long since at last he contracted a severe cold and his poor we weak body failing to rally at ai his bidding gave way and demb came on sunday morning dec 13 to bring him that peace and rest rent that he had earned carped through his lite of usefulness usel ulness and integrity his wife and all his him children were present he leaves three sons and ten daughters and twelve grandchildren his funeral was hold held on tuesday dec 15 and the meeting house bouse was filled with friends and neighbors who oame came to 10 pay the last tribute of respect to 10 him the speakers were president gowans counselor anderson eiders Jef teries and williams and jonn joan JEL white ot of salt bait lake all testified tea tined to his worth and character as a deru deputed ted oon con eistert laitem day saint may his rest be sweet and his
