was always something to catch the eye we arrived here at night and the ride down the hudson on a steamer after dark when all the other steamers were alight was the grandest sight I 1 ever saw I 1 thought chicago was a large and busy town but it is nothing in comparison with new york I 1 do not believe I 1 saw as much in salt lake during the last ten years ds as I 1 have done today the scenery on the route was fine grand over the rocky mountains and the fields which lay on either side of us as well as the forests of oak and pine on the hill tops in chicago we visited the lake front and saw hundreds of vessels in the decks being loaded ready to sail across the lake and also a great many in the river which runs through the city the scenery along lake ontario was very good but above it all is a little nook in the west called home which is incomparable and which no one can properly appreciate until he misses its usual attractions and the laces faces of those who have made it near and dear to him well I 1 cannot get downhearted the gospel has got to be preached and I 1 must seek the spirit of it and ga forth in humility to do it and then I 1 know all will be well I 1 trust that the blessings of the lord will be with you and enable us all to live those lives jives which will be acceptable to him philadelphia june lath this morning we visited central park new york and the statue of liberty on beddoes Bed loes island also castle gardens at 2 p in we were ferried across the hudson for the pennsylvania railroad station where we boarded a train arriving in philadel phia at when we left tor for this hotel which is one ot of the finest in the city and beats the knutsford all ail to pieces it is the finest looking place I 1 ever entered where we stayed in new york is quite nice but nothing in comparison with this we have sen seen s en the sights of nearly all the principal cities between salt lake and here but this is the best of all kansas city and chicago are swill tubs in comp comparison aribon tonight we saw the fire department turn out which was quite a sight lor for us I 1 also took a look at the statue of your friend W william illiam penn as it stands upon the tower of the city hall halla a great building larger than our city and county building the twenty story built buildings lings in these cities are grand to view some of the boys went through the steamer and pronounce it a palace on the water I 1 have had several rides on the river and we are all enjoying ourselves in the best possible manner give my regards to all the boys and tell them I 1 am feeling fine every way S S Belgen land june esth we left the docks of the american line steamship company on board the Belgen land at 1130 this morn morning tag and the cadrain says the pilot will informed us that the mail from queenstown Queens town was about four days earlier than that from liverpool and knowing you would be worrying until you heard of our arrival I 1 thought I 1 would write as soon as possible we left philadelphia on saturday morning june irth at 1130 a m the pilot leaving the vessel about dusk the land fast fading from view sunday morning I 1 arose sick and vomiting but soon recovered although i lost three meals that day the neet day I 1 was entirely well my appetite being enormous our voyage was simply grand having a touch of all sorts of weather fine stormy windy and foggy our treatment on board was waa the blest best we could wish for and the officers were the most polite set of men I 1 ever met with our food consisted of everything imaginable magi and was certainly the best that could be procured anywhere we have now been upon the water ten and ahall a half days and begin to be quite tired we have only missed one day without seeing one or more vessels and some times we would see five or six a day we have seen lots of fish one day two whales lay near the vessel spouting volumes of water into the air on board we indulge in in games of various kinds hold concerts in the evening in the saloon and have it a good time in general on sunday morning last we had religious services in the saloon the rev mr taylor officiating he preached a very good sermon on the character of christ but his prayers were not in harmony at all with our manner of worship immediately after we retired to our state room and held a short meeting thanking the lord for preserving our lives sacrament remembrance mem brance of of the savior whose life we are trying to pattern after well mother I 1 lid did not realize that the world was so large as it is but no where in it can be found anything in comparison with home there are six of us mr young vocalist mckinnon chaplain and knudson orators bjorklund and 1 I musicians all are well and we are enjoying ourselves yet I 1 should like to see home again we have had a good time from the start and no sickness to amount to anything has marred our pleasure so we feel about ready to go to work wark and work with a will to accomplish the object of our mission in about forty hours we shall be in liverpool remember me kindly to all inquiring friends the sea a is all right we were promised a we safe voyage and the least tear has never entered our minds but we have gone on from day to day trusting in the lord loid and he has carried us through in safety well I 1 trust you are all right and dont worry about me the crowd and all were covered with flour and told not to come again or they would be broken up brother hunsaker and I 1 arrived there rather early and saw seir several ot of the reverend gentlemen awaiting our arrival pacing up and down the street as though they could not control any longer their evil desires we spoke to them and they answered in a few minutes about twenty saints arrived in company with brother mccune who is only eigl eighteen iteen years of age we formed a circle and commenced our meeting several of the brethren spoke but they were mocked slurred blurred hissed and laughed at called liars frauds de luders and all the evil names imaginable until I 1 could hardly hold my temper mr blubber ber our chief antagonist was directly back of me calling us liars and trying to crowd through and disturb us I 1 would not let him pass they had a dozen on the outside working up the crowd to a high state of excitement and several were passing little sheets of paper mormonism exposed a notice of jarmans books around they pass hundreds ot of them every meeting w we hold we had just closed our meeting when one ot of our opponents was to speak but he would not come in the ring he called us antul names while those on the outside incited the crowd to mob us the leader must have given the signal lor for in a moment they charged down upon us and we were hemmed in a surging mass of over a thousand people who were dragging and pushing us all over the str street et trying to floor us so they could trample on us but we were up to their game and they did not succeed they did however strike some of us and knocked our hats on off and I 1 must say used us for a foot ballas we were almost carried in the crowd until six policemen arrived and quelled the disturbance dirt to some extent they P put t the elders in a narrow passage so wl we could escape but before getting through we found that the crowd had gone around and stood waiting for us at the other end they followed us for some distance continuing their abuse one man struck brother mccune mccu ne on the head so he immediately turned around and caught him full in the face knocking him down on the pavement to be trampled on by his pals some of tife the saints went direct home others sought protection at the police station from later accounts we learn that none were injured we returned home safe and had a good laugh over it all we intend to hold another meeting there on thursday night mother dont think for a moment that we are in danger for we are not and the police promise us protection at ai our future meetings I 1 am well and am enjoying my labors immensely and have not the least fear but what we shall come out victors in the end dont consider for a moment that I 1 am complain ing for such is not
