Show JUNE 23, 1987 L, Softball injuries on increase More than 30 million adults and children play softball annually making softball the largest team participation sport in the United States. With this populaiity comes a number of softball injuries. According to the "American Journal of Emergency Medicine" (1985 90 percent of soft-ba- ll May; 3:199-202- ) injuries occur late in the actual game, and in the more experienced players. Frequently, alcohol consumption was involved in the injuries reported. Fingers, ankles and hands were the most common sites of injuries, with a fall such as sliding into base, the most likely mechanism of injury. As in any sport, proper condi- tioning can minimize strains and sprains involved with the sport. Frequently softball players participate only in softball and not any aerobic form of exercise (such as running, swimming, etc.). Lack of endurance and fatigue as the game goes into the final innings may play a part in the increased incidence of injuries late in the game. An aerobic conditioning is Kaysville championship American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) team Region 51, Division 4, includes: front, Stephen Hunt, left, Ryan Reed, Robert Holland, Dean Simmons, Kendall Sedgwick, Chris Hintze, Troy Felt, Brian Johnson and Jeremy Lewis; back, Adam Sheffield, left, Clark Stewart, Coach Farrel Lewis, Asst. In addition, particularly with pitchers, beginning a strengthening program 8 weeks before the season can not only help prevent overuse injuries but may actually help you pitch better. The umpire is frequently a target of injuries such as heat stress, as he or she frequently wears dark clothing and must stay on the field for the whole game. Frequent cool water breaks can reduce this as well as wearing a light colored hat. Frequently the umpire is not in the best of health and-o- r good physical condition.
