That came with the retirement of Davis High School faculty member, Jay Cullimore. Nearly ten years after Cullimore announced his retirement from a highly successful coaching career, hes saying continued Cullimore. Cullimore still feels the game of football is "just as great a game as it once was." But he feels that kids might be more skilled today and receive better coaching. In 1969 the school promoted from within and elevated Cullimore to the head football position, the start of great era but the continuation of an even more prestigious one, the grand ole Davis High athletic tradition. Cullimore, his coaches and the kids did nothing to slight the tradition during the ten years he served as the head coach there. All Davis did was to finish as region champs five of those ten years and racked up 74 victories compared to 36 losses and one tie over that illustrious period. Throughout his coaching career, Cullimore had the knack of thinking things through in his own mind. Once a decision was made, this was one coach who didnt mince words and usually things were carried out as he wanted. Ward Sawley, who served as an assistant under Cullimore and later inherited the head position from him, commented, Jay was a calculator, a strong thinker. He was in the mainstream of things to keep the Davis tradition alive. Cullimores success can be linked to a number of things, but he always had a plan and a design and worked to the end to carry that through. Cullimore carried plenty of professionalism about him, but if it was necessary to show emotion, then he showed it. Emotion came as a method to move his club, not because he was losing control. Sawley further stated, He had his own vision and everyone respected that. Dee Robins, who served as the head scout during the Cullimore Cullimore The practice sessions I dont miss, but when the lights go on on Friday night, that I do miss, he said. Football for the most part was a fun and unforgettable time for my family. Everyone was involved in it, including all the kids who were in school during that time. I believe they were fairly fond times, said Cullimore. There were many challenging segments over the Cullimores ten years as head coach, but perhaps one that stands out a little above the rest was his first playoff victory back in 1969. After going 1 and trying for the league crown with Layton and Skyline, Davis was to meet Granite in the first round of the playoffs. We guessed right on everything and did everything right against a much bigger school and led at one time. That victory helped that bunch of kids and of course gave the coaching staff a lot of confidence through the coming years, n cause it was a never a show. At Davis weve always had a team effort in getting the job done and thats what brings success, said Cullimore. one-ma- Fishing Assn, helping clubs easy-to-us- 35-- 0 JAY CULLIMORE with a fall such as sliding into base, the most likely mechanism of in- More than 30 million adults and AFTMA, 1250 Grove Ave., Barrington, Illinois 60010. children play softball annually making softball the largest team participation sport in the United jury.
