Show Th Magna Tlmaa. July 23. 1 981 , Paga 7 Accident Downs Wires And Injures Passenger The Beat of a Afferent Drum by By Jackie Parkins Thayne KEARNS - July 15, at approximately 8:55 p.m. a vehicle traveling north on Cougar Lane hit a power pole. Salt Lake County police and paramedic units responded to the call. Jackie Parkins Thayna By JACKIE PARKINS THAYNE A friend of mine recently passed away as a result of a terminal illness. She was a friend to me, but reflecting over the last few months I sincerely question my worth as a friend to her. Several months ago this friend. Raven, called me at 2 a.m. She was angry about her illness being terminal. Why me she asked. I will not die. Ill fight this thing, but I wont die. she insisted. Ravens questions grew more and more serious and I felt so unable to give her the answers she so much wanted to hear. When I hung up I felt the tears flow and I silently begged my God to be with her. Weeks passed and once again the phone rang at an early morning hour. It was Raven, she was crying. She was in pain, both emotionally and physically. Raven did not want her husband to know of her sufferring. She was also worried about expenses piling up rapidly. Her medications, blood transfusions and tests were so costly and not all of it was covered by their health insurance. Raven reflected upon her years and a brother she had lost. She told me he was killed during a war. On the day of his memorial services someone from her small Utah County community tossed a rag doll on Ravens lawn. The doll was half white and half red and had a note attached which read, The only good d is a dead halfbreed. Together we sobbed for what seemed an eternity, uncontrollably. She asked me why her d and family was disliked for being a why these seemingly kind and religious people had poured hate upon here. Again I could not answer. 1 had great difficulty just trying to comprehend someone being so mean and hateful as to toss that doll. Raven knew she was running out of time and she wanted answers, she deserved them, and I found it difficult to even respond verbally. As time went on I avoided Raven somewhat. I loved her dearly, but felt so inadequate as a friend. I wanted to give her peace. All she ever asked of me was answers to her questions and I let her down. Raven is gone now and I wished that I had been honest enough to tell her that I loved her, but felt helpless as her friend. I wanted so much to help. God knows I loved Raven, wanted to ease her pain, or even just answer some of her questions. Ravens pain is over and I believe she is just beginning a new adventure surrounded with peace and love. Death, to me, is a rebirth, a vessel to tomorrow that will hold greater love, knowledge and endless peace. Goodbye Raven, I do love you. EDITORS NOTE . .Death and dying is something we have or will have to deal with.
