Although there were one or two good girl athletes in our age group, I always visualized womens sports as something off to one side. I never thought it improper to give the girls the smaller gym, the inconvenient hours at the pool, and the farthest fields. After all it was mens sports that really counted. But now comes a new age, another dispen- sation, and a different outlook. We live in the days of womens lib, title nine, and the Equal Rights Amendment. Circumstance demands that we all do as is often doen in the medical world- - get a second opinion. Those of us who are honest must conclude that women have every right to participate in sports to their hearts content. I have always cherished and respected women and now it appears that I must also take them seriously in the area of athletics. Sports seem to have three major reasons for participation; fun, health, and public entertainment. Girls have every right to have fun and to be healthy. Few would argue that point, but when it comes to puclic entertainment many feel that girls sports do not measure up. The students, alumni, and towspeople do not crowd the gym and the playing fields to watch the ladies compete. There is little question that more revenue will be collected from patrons of boys sports than girls games. However, public entertainment is only reason for sports participation and remembering that fun and health are the other reasons, all thinking people will conclude that girls have every right to compete if they wish. I am of the opinion that sports participation is for both boys and girls. I offer the following poem to bolster my position. Our baseball team never did very much We had me, Pee Wee, Earl and Dutch. And the Oak Street Tigers always got beat. Until the new kid moved in on our street. The kid moved in with a mitt and a bat. And an official New York Yankee hat! The new kid plays shortstop or second base, And can outrun us all in any race. We were playing the league champs I knew cupational fields.
