George Lucas himself said there was no way “Episode I” could match the hype - a fair statement The “Star Wars” trilogy has taken on a mythological presence in our popular culture to the point that the next story would have difficulty satisfying expectations With that in mind I tried to lower the bar and just go and enjoy I honestly have to say -- 1 was still disappointed “Episode I” begins with a political dispute between the Republic’s Trade Federation and a small planet called Naboo It’s not clear what the dispute’s about but two Jedi Knights Qui-Go- n Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his n Kenobi apprentice (Ewan McGregor) are sent as diplomats in an effort to resolve the conflict It’s soon apparent to the Jedi that the trade leaders are not interested in a peaceful solution So the Jedi Knights feel the need to warn the planet’s leader the young Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman) of an impending invasion So far OK Once on the planet the Jedi get sidetracked with the outcast Jar Jar Binks and the underwater Gungas Binks is a floppy-eare- d creature who takes on the role of comic sidekick by speaking in a diastrange Jamaican-soundin- g lect that’s tough to understand Still he’s cute and the kids think he’s funny so no problem So what ARE the problems? 1) The characters are not fleshed out We learn nothing n Jinn about Qui-Go- n Kenobi or the Queen and very little about Anakin Skywalker 2) The story isn’t engaging enough There’s no suspense or fear just one brief moment of sadness The battle droids are certainly not very fierce they look like a bunch of duckmen Like CaO Moab 47781° movie critic r Yesterday Obi-Wa- Utah temperatures Regional Sources National Weather Service Intermountain Allergy & Asthma Clinic Associated Press National weather forecast for noon Wednesday May 19 The AccuWeather 703 Bands separate high temperature zones for the day rip-of- fi'i" 100 ! five McCart- or fi So why 212 stars? The film has two exciting scenes the Pod-rac- e sequence and the light saber duel near the end The film also has some nice special effects which look like they’ll pay off later in video game sales Otherwise Yoda Samuel L Jackson as Mace Windu and Jabba the Hut are just bit players in a rather uninspired storyline that lends very little to the background of some of the most famous characters in sci-- movie history Disappointed? You bet I’m disappointed Lucas shows once again that he can direct action scenes and that he can take technology to new levels but he falls short in the human interaction department My advice is he should enlist the aid of those who helped him with “The Empire Strikes Back” and get back that sense of adventure and excitement that has made “Star Wars” part of our cultural identity There’s no question nearly everyone will run out and see “Episode I” - which opens on eight screens in Top of Utah theaters after midnight tonight - at least But once once It’s cntic-prothe hype simmers down repeat business may simmer as well Here’s hoping “Episode II” (due in 2002) will get back some of “The Force” sadly lost in “The Phantom Menace” O fi of ney songs will launch a new charity called the Garland Appeal which aims to raise McCartney money for cancer research that doesn’t involve animal testing The composers involved in the project include McCartney Sir Richard Rodney Bennett and John Tavener whose piece “Song for Athene” was used at Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997 Singer Perry Como is 87 Actor Bill Macy is 77 Actor Robert Morse is 68 Actor Dwayne Hickman (“The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis”) is 65 Country singer George Strait is n 47 Page Hamilton of Helmet is 39 Rapper Special Ed is 25 Singer Darryl Allen of Mista is 19 Singer-musicia- 20 years ego in N Utah of 54 years Ira Huggins became a life member of Kiwanis International on Thursday Outstanding Art Student Awards of the year were presented to Gail James and Joseph Schknker graduating ElizaWeber State seniors beth N Hartman a senior at Bonneville High School is the recipient of a $300 Ogden Legal Secretaries Association scholarship 50 years ago in N Utah Court ruling backs Jo© Today’s birthdays Prominent Ogden attorney The concert will debut at the Charterhouse public school in Surrey on July 18 before going to the Riverside Church in New York on Dec 4 Linda McCartney a professional photographer died of breast cancer in April 1998 Dlffi© It’s official: Joe Difile’s hit country tune “Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox Lf I Die” is original The US 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati decided Monday that Diffie’s tune was written independently of Everett A Ellis’ ballad “Lay Me Out by the Jukebox When I Die” Ellis brought the lawsuit against Diffie his publisher record company three songwriters and several others claiming his chorus was stolen The song reached No 3 on the Billboard country chart in Paul Christiansen of Ogden High and John Dawson of Davis High were named the outstanding senior athletes in their schools for the school year They were each presented with a gold watch from the Examiner and KLO Jean D Case was honored by Ogden High School faculty members at a luncheon and program in celebration of his retirement after 30 years of teaching industrial arts classes in city schools Standard-- 1993 Review - Staff wire reports Cruise Kidman THE FILM: ‘Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace’ OUR RATING: 12 STARRING: Liam Neeson Ewan McGregor Natalie Portman Jake Lloyd Ian McDiarmid Pemilla August Ahmed Best BEHIND THE SCENES: Written directed and executive-produce- d by George Lucas (‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Obi-Wa- A The concert which will include made out of papier mache bad guy 3) The devil-face- d He Darth Maul is a has a couple of lines a couple of scenes and that’s it!
