Would Hornsby’s gift for vividly evoking small-tow- n life get lost in the mix? “Spirit Trail" quickly dispels those fears The soul and gospel influences arc resoundingly apparent and Hornsby seldom has sounded more inspired aggressive or funky at the piano But the fundamental strength of the album resides in the songwriting and once again much of it reflects Hornsby’s admiration for the Southern literary tradition The most conspicuous example of how writers like Harper Lee have influenced Hornsby’s work is the ballad “Sneaking Up on Boo Radley” with its innocent yet foreboding chorus: Dead-inspire- jam-happ- “I want to be the kind of artist who is around for a long time who tells the truth and helps you know you are normal and not losing your mind I want to make known for his work with Digable Planets and Mary J Blige) and experimenting with drum loops and samples "They say he's crazy They say he’s gone We play our tricks make up funny songs Sneaking around feeling badly sneaking up on Boo Radley " Mostly though Hornsby draws the album’s cast of characters from his own experience or imagination and they are a colorful lot: a snake-handlin- g evangelist (“Preacher in the Ring”) an old Hornsby acquaintance turned prostitute (“Sad Moon”) a loeal despot (“King of the Hill") adolescents struggling to assert their personalities (“Pete & Manny”) One of Hornsby’s most appealing traits as a writer is his flair for creating a social circle and then swiftly establishing how people relate to each other within it The opening line from “Pete and Manny” is typical: "Pete took up Latin dancing The emphasis on electronics though doesn’t obscure Hornsby’s talent as a songwriter and some of the sleek arrangements particularly the one fashioned for “See the Same Way” offer a contemporary perspective on soul music without sounding overly derivative or trendy Spirit Trail Brace Hornsby Trail" is true to the d tone of I lornsby’s previous recordings the second disc finds
