Show OUR COUNTRY IN DANGER A FEW months ago anarchy reigned in a portion of wyoming A force of armed citizens aided by armed auxiliaries from texas invaded a portion tion of the state for a lawless lawlees purpose A number cumber of people were killed and a terrible whole wholesale eale nim massacre sacre was only prevented by the timely intervention of federal troops questions ions connected with that disgraceful affair are still pending in the courts in which charges of murder have been preferred against a large number of persons implicated in the remarkable incident in the history of our neighboring state the wyoming matter is not yet sett settled lid within the last few days day in three different states of the union as many outbreaks have occurred two of them even more serious and much more bloody than the wyoming affair a each of these uprisings it ft has baa been neV necessary le essary to invoke the aid of the mil tary gitary either that of the state or federal govern both combined we refer to the horrible conflict at homestead the scarcely lose less thrilling tragedy at coeur d alene idaho and the threatening situation at kentucky where a race war to is in its incipient stages in each of the uprisings outside of the one last named the underlying cause of the disturbance is the same moneyed interests the cattlemen undertook by unlawful means to stop the encroachments encroach ments of small emall landholders that the public lands might be maintained as immense pasture grounds and to prevent the stealing of stock by murdering those who they claimed were thieves the homestead trouble and that in idaho were the result ot of a dispute between capital and labor the cause of the revolt in kentucky involves another question it la is a growing and danger ous us one anti and means rapine and murder we submit that these are dangerous times and hold that those who cannot canno t see future peril in exi existing eting conditions must be blind to the plainest indications the causes that have produced such serious consequences within so 80 brief a time will become more and more prolific in the production ot of such terrible scenes as have lately horrified the nation the questions which pring from such euch conditions are sure to lead to di disaster santer unless great wisdom is used by the thinking men of the nation conflicts between the forces of labor on one hand and capital on the other will naturally leau lead up to a struggle between labor and lawful authority the latter will be invoked as an has been the case in tach each of the three conflicts referred to for the protection of capital and the struggle must therefore be largely transferred from a fight between labor and capita to one between labor and constituted authority under the law this will lead to the creation of an im pres siam upon the minds of the masses rightfully or wrongfully that the government to is in league with money to hold them down let those who imagine akis this view to be radical wait and be satisfied battened of its ito correctness in the natural course of events one situation grows grow out of another each successive one being more complicated than its predecessor in all such disputes as aa those out of which these theae conflicts have grown the resources of arbitration ought to bp be exhausted before any recourse reco uree is in had to the law of force which has no con i evincing efficacy en enforced forced au emission is not a curative process this truth applies PR 11 6 9 with more potency to the united states than to any other ether nation on earth |
