Show CITY COUNCIL the city council met in regular session june 28 president loofbourow in the chair the aldermen alde roien in attendance were rich folland hardy horn lawson ewing Si moudis beardsley hel heiss moran bell karrick evans evane absent none the minutes of the previous regular session and the journal of the executive meeting hold held on monday after noon in regard to paving on state street were read amended and approved before proceeding with the regular order of business hardy called for the reading of the minutes of council meeting of june assistant clerk Vand enberger was wag sent down stairs after them andon and on his hie return the following from thu the report of the tret street committee was read concerning the paving work on state street we report that I 1 tion shows that alft work has been carefully watched by the board of public works and the oily city engineer and that on sundry occasions the city officials have condemned stone and curbing and the same has been placed by the contractors we believe that any attempt to cut cast discredit on the work Is unwarranted unwar anted and we are assured that the resolution was not offered by mr hardy with the intent im jn of reflecting on the quality of the work we are satisfied that the state street paving work la is a great credit to the city hardy I 1 think that report is in wrong and is virtually a recommendation of the paving work done on state street which we know to is not done according to contract I 1 had no intention whatever to reflect upon any officer dt 01 the city but bat upon the work itself I 1 therefore move a reconsideration of the action of the council in adopting that report and that abet it be expunged from the records folland I 1 second the motion hardy 1 am informed that it la is on the adoption of that portion of the report that the paving company hinge binge their proposed suit euit I 1 believe that the paving work referred to is a great credit to this city and as good as any in the west went s nd I 1 dont think we should change our minds minde in reference thereto hardy This Thie work to is not first class and I 1 know it I 1 have seen and examined pavement in ney nep york philadelphia boston chicago and other large cities of the united stater and I 1 know that the work is in not equal to that done im i those cities on the motion to reconsider being put it was carried on a vote of nine to three the report was wag taken from the files and referred to the committee on streets the salt lake city railway company submitted its map and profiles for far the extension of its centre street line ian committee on streets with city engineer associated A E farmer asked that certain extensions be made committee on waterworks water works the west went side hotel company asked to lie be allowed to do paving in front of its prop property efty committee on streets joseph S richards sent in a communication muni cation in which he tendered his resignation as a member of the city board of health resignation acceptor accept oo P F H auerbach Auerba oh and others asked that certain portions of north temple street be put in passable condition committee Committe eon on streets T E asked that oak street be degraded craded committee on streets william laVa langton and others asked tor for a foot bridge across the eighth west street canal granted the mountain ice and cold storage company asked permission to connect its plant with the city water mains with a larger plant than that now used committee on streets with power to act julia carlson asked for a rebate of aiu tax tai committee on water works dr J W taylor asked that his bis sidewalk be accepted committee on streets chief stanton of the fire bra department asked the councie to appropriate for the purchase of a span of roan horses horaces which were raised in cache valley and which were now DOW in this city for sale committee on fire department part ment with power to act STREET in the matter of the correspondence concerning difficulty between the rocky mountain bell telephone company and salt lake city street railway company the street committee recommended that the matter tl be referred to the city attorney and city a petition of H W 77 0 others concerning curbs on state street between south temple and first south streets be granted ted that the petition of C W canted santed San higgins iggino for repairs on first west street be granted that the petition of robert thompson A W oliver and W R gibbs be not granted that the clity city marshal be requested to notify proprietors of all stands now on the sidewalk that as soon as the permits heretofore granted by the council expire they will be expected to move their stands adopted LICENSE REVOKED the committee on license becom mended that the sullivan saloon license be revoked adopted GAS ORDINANCE on motion of alderman lawson the natural gas ordinance was taken up and read by the recorder it provides for the construction and maintenance of street mains and services of utilizing and manufactured fuel gas in the city of salt lake lawson law son moved that the ordinance be read the second time by title and the third time in full folland moved to amend by re fering it to the committee on municipal laws lawa with the city attorney associated lawson said that it was waa very important that the ordinance be passed forthwith there was a represents representative of the company from the east bast here with plenty of money to do the work and thus give employment to the idle men of the city endorsed everything that mr lawson had bad said folland contended that he was not opposed to capital but he wanted it understood that he was opposed to the passage of any ordinance on the night of its introduction he even know who this company was volunteered the information that it was the american natural gas company which was recently granted a franchise reorganized rich said he be did not belleve believe that the companes comp anys former franchise had expired that company had not even held a directors meeting they too claimed that they lad plenty of motley money when their franchise granc iran td but nothing more had been heard since that time karrick said with emphasis that there seemed to be a disposition to railroad the measure through a d he be was going to oppose it evans evana too was opposed to any great haste in the tb matter it was absolutely impossible for the council to understand the matter thoroughly on the evening of its introduction it was an ordinance of great importance and should bra be carefully i quiren into some discussion here arose as to whether the measure was a committee report bell denied that it was folland how did it come in here heiss heise the street committee introduced it by request moved chrt it lay on the table until the next meeting rich moved that it lay on the table for one week ewing moved anat it be referred to the committee on municipal laws jaws bell said that it had already ay been disposed of the chair said that such was true in part but that the action was not toode so definite asto as to prevent its ita that body about two months ago S wanted to kaw the one reason for its reference folland replied that thattie the matter had been before that body in a different form which arose out of the dog tax collector asking the city to purchase him a wagon for capturing and hauling in away unregistered dogs tawson lawson moved to strike out that portion of the ordinance which provided enat the recorder N meeting and under that heading submitted a communication from mayor baskin announcing that a contract had been entered into by him for the city with the engle S yui tary and Crania crematory tory company of des dee Moine 8 iowa for the erection of a municipal p ai crematory THE CONTRACT OON TRACT the contract which covers several pages of typewritten manuscript was wa read in full by the recorder after which chairman beardsley of the sanitary committee offered a resolution ratifying the contract it was u luaui adolte 1 I the cost of tle the crematory is waterworks WATER WORKS ORDINANCE A AB a ordinance in relation to the city waterworks water works fixing the rates for the ensuing year was waa read the third time and 4 I 1 passed MORE WIND alderman folland offered a tion down the price per 1000 cubic feet from 40 cents to 25 I 1 cents d lawson la won he could not under stand why the gentleman made such f motion we were now paying nayip J per 1000 feet for gas evans interrupted by saying that per 1000 cubic feet was the price 1 paid for illuminating and not fuel gaab he moved to amend by making j it t so 30 cents 1 seconded the amend ment and spoke at length in favor of ofa the motion I 1 awson considered 40 cents little enough and was opposed to any bedua t tion 4 folland 1 I am sorry there seems to be a dig disposition to push this measure through as I 1 should like to have time to investigate the matter it may be all right but it looks to me like it is a great encouragement for monopoly we are here in the interest of the taxpayers and not loot as representatives of the people and should make a tho thorough rugh investigation of the question he moved that the measure lay jay over until tuesday night next lawson 1 I am certainly opposed to any further delay the measure should be passe J tonight we are growing old while thinking over this matter the thirty cent amendment finally carried and there were several motions to adjourn considerable parliamentary tary bpi sparring arring of an amateurish character was indulged in when moran became disgusted cited and moved to strike out the enacting clause tin tie brought lawson and to their feet like A a flash and the latter sarcastically cried go angrily and back to chicago moran made no oral reply but sat down avd and darted furious glances at the called to his big gentleman who so vividly
