press it was full of startling statements which huoh are of so BO bertous a nature as to require the most moat complete investigation possible following is the testimony JOE JOB 0 I 1 the alleged city detective was the first witness he testified that he had arrested the defendant he said further 1 I know that her place of residence is reputed to be a house of prostitution I 1 have seen men enter and come from the house during the day and at night I 1 visited the place in portion person on the night that miss elsie moved there I 1 know that beer was sold there for I 1 bought it paid for it and drank it laughter harry duke city treasurer told ma me that the house was disorderly and he be believed resorted to for purposes of lewdness A young man named mcerlain told me that miss elsie elate was running a house on vie fie quiet he to is a roomer there and ought to know attorney here held a consultation sul tation with his client and then asked that a subpoena be issued for mcerlain the request was granted and MARION FIELDS a gaudily attired self confessed sport ing character took the stand and in response to questions nervously said 1 I do not know that the general reputation of the house bouse la is bad I 1 know that miss elsie kept furnished furn labed rooms and that a placard to that effect was tacked on to the front of the house attorney coad Is not that a usual ruse for women of the defendants defendant 1 a stripe jd witness I 1 cannot say sir air how iglow long did you remain there only one week what cihat did you do 1 11 I followed dressmaking at the expiration of that week where did you go 1 IT I entered a house did you pay for your board and lodging at miss egeler El eler 1111 A portion of lt it miss elsie holds my trunk and some of my wearing apparel for the remainder Y 13 SERGEANT ERGEANT GEORGE A SHEETS said I 1 have known the defendant for about one year she la Is a keeper of a house of prostitution I 1 have kept close watch of her place for the most of sixty days last past part attorney coad state why the defendant was not arrested arrea ted when the lost last regular raid was made I 1 witness because the officer who had charge of that branch of the busi nebs refused to swear to the complaint who was that officer huge li glenn chhy why did he refu refuse seVY I 1 because he said there was no evidence that she was breaking the law have chave you seen hacks backs drive up to the defendants house 1 I have both day and night cross examined by mr how do you know that the defendants ant Is house bouse to is ot the character set met forth in the complaint cc because I 1 have watched it for sixty days until one and two in the morning 21 2 1 and it has taken you all that time to catch these women well no that la is not exactly 9 stand aside call the next witness ay no OFFICER THOMAS MATTHEWS theo then took the stand and te testified stilled that he be had heard mr duke complain about the character oter of the defendants house H he e liva lived in that vicinity and could corroborate mr dukes statement he ee too had bad watched the place and saw men going in inand and out from his hie own knowledge he could not say bay what they went there for but believed that it was waa for immoral purposes POLICEMAN 0 MIKE SULLIVAN SULLIVA Nl a good natured six toot fot pound officer who one time posed before the public for hobb rs as a pugilist but who gave up the manly art to accept a position on the police force took the stand and said mid 1 I have visited mitts miss elsie eldies Is establishment on eighth south street I 1 believe equal led SERGEANT SHEETS was recalled and further testified I 1 saw four men and one woman en ell deavor to escape the former had no lao intention of going through the gate gati but jumped clear over the fence ROW and scattered in all directions I 1 did not see the men come out of the buildt building ng but savi saw them on the porch and as they ran through the yard and leaped the fence why you as an officer in ila search of violators of the law make an attempt to catch the men as well as all the women if the place is a house or of prostitution the men were certainly equally guilty were they not it required all our time to take care 1 of the female so said mr glit it required I 1 the strength and diplomacy of thre ebig ebl j policemen to arrest three little wor women nerl did it at this there was another burst of merriment and again the bailiff ws was called upon to restore order the last question rather confused the witness and attorney did not press hir him further but inquired Is it not a matter of fact that these theme men you saw were merely roomers well awell they acted rather strangely fo for r regular inmates of the house I 1 witness was again asked it if he did not think it was his duty to have placed these men under arrest he replied in the affirmative buteaud but said that it would have taken at least eight policemen Doli cemen to have done the work 1 he finally witness I 1 would like to know what that has got to do with this ease case attorney here took the floor and objected to the putting of such questions saying that mr janney did not figure in the 1 case in any manner whatever attorney coad thought the question entirely proper as an it would tend to show the animus of the wit fiess to the officers of the force the court took the same view and decided that the witness might answer the question witness if I 1 had made any such statement it would be criminal and ana I 1 am not here for the purpose of crimi dating mys elfand cannot be compelled
