Show OLD FOLKS DAY the seventeenth annual excursion of the old folks of salt lake city and vicinity w s a success in every particular ti it came off june the trip being over the rio bio grande western railway to payson pay eon a pretty town of inhabitants seventy miles from this city A special train consisting of seventeen coaches and a baggage oar car was placed at the disposal of the old folks arrangements committee by the local management of that company free of cost the courtesy and efficiency of the railroad officials and employee emp loyes contributed in no small degree to the success of the occasion the old folks arrangements committee was composed of the following gentlemen C B R savage george goddard dard john kirkman bishop W B Pree preston tOD W Eding edington tor W N naylor lor W L binder andrew jeanw jensen a and X d N A empey all of whom were present and actively engaged in superintending super intending the work of attending to the old people brothers savage goddard and kirkman were members of the original committee which inaugurated old folks day kev seventeen enteen years ago biebow hunter now deceased was one of their colleagues at that time to mr savage might be credited the idea of originating the day and though on the first excursion only a limited number of persons participated he had bad the satisfaction of seeing 1152 persons on the train yesterday 1000 of whom were over seventy years of age shortly before 8 yesterday morning the old folks and their friends began beean to pour into the B R 0 W depot they came in backs carriages street care buggies and in vehicles of all kinds those between 70 and 80 wore red led badgis madg s between 80 and 90 blue and those of 90 and over white suk silk the seventies seemed so go numer cup that the woods appeared t to be full of them the eighties were not so plentiful and the nineties numbered about half a doxer doom the work of seating the old people was promptly performed under the guidance of the committee and an able corps of assistants for this duty three young two ladies bud one gentleman were fir car ca tie cars care were designated anti and the deputations were numbered accordingly so there was no nd confusion immediately after the train started lemonade cake candy and other little delicacies were served to the old folks no royal or aristocratic personages could be more tenderly waited on then came the old folks choir composed of members of the tabernacle choir under prof beesley and serenaded the occupants of each car on the trip they gave 18 serenades no easy task in yesterdays temperature the were followed by mr W WC C dunbar with wath bagpipes who also rendered the ighland highland iff march PY in each of the IS 18 cars can contingents tin gents were taken up at all the depots between here and payson and care was taken that no aged korpon to participate should be neglected the train arrived at payson about 1130 1180 am a m tue payson silver band was at the depot discoursing lively airs for the benefit of the old people the payson executive corn com cittee bar under tb the guidance of john quigley acquitted themselves aebly stalwart young follows fellows were stationed at the steps stepa of each oar car to assist the aged to alight and in caries where persons were too feeble to walk to take them bodily in their arms to vehicles in waiting tle the road all the way from the depot to the city park was strewn with now new mown hay bay and on each side of this was a lineol young lasses asea all dressed in white waving waring miniature miu lature american flags the benjamin brasa bran bond bend was also in attendance and marched at the head bead of the procession the old folks marched six abreast to the city park the entrance to which was marked by a triumphal arch under which was waa wrought in beautiful tul flowers flowen the word WELCOME in fact it was a triumphal march such as only conquerors or heroes are usually accorded immediately on their arrival at the grounds the work of dining commenced bulwer says man can live without lots of things thing but he be cant live without dining here were special tables of great length length laden with edibles of the choicest kind and in attendance was a little army of young men and young women dressed in garbs suggestive of the culinary department part ment ot of Delmo nicole coe the banquet bet was a success in every respect though bough the crowd was larger than was anticipated yet there was aban ance for all and large quantities of viands remained untouched among those over 70 jere ere noticed the venerable en erable parents of bt Excellency governor A JL thomas mr thomas sr was born in and takes de light in talking the ancient tongue in which and boadicea Boadie ea exhorted their warriors to oppose the invading legions of the roman sers on british soil nineteen centuries ago mrs thomas isau isan american lady having been born in the keystone state some seventy summers since hut but she can do a little in the ancient by byway way of accompaniment to her aged spouse governor thomas though having attended several of these old folks days felt more at home yesterday than ever on the way down president angus M cannon who seemed to be personally acquainted with every man and woman on the train escorted the govern r through the cars care and gave his bis excellency a personal introduction to the veterans when he got through he be had shaken the bands of over 1150 persons representing perhaps a score of nationalities rationalities ranging from the age of nineteen to ninety four there were on the grounds at payson probably about 2600 2500 people of these fully 1200 were over 70 payson and vicinity furnished about over 70 that town also furnished the oldest person rachel drollinger aged 94 a native of kentucky the next oldest lady was mrs sarah free 92 a native of england mrs anne Tayl orthe mother of counselor joseph E taylor who was with the party also aged 92 a native 0 england was among the veterans jane cornwall Cornwa lq aged 90 native of ireland Ire laal and johanna jenson jensen aged 90 native of sweden comprised the ladies list of 90 and over there was one gentleman aged 92 joseph hancock Hanco cb a citizen of payson and robert wimmer aged 90 also of paymon this it is believed corn the list of and over about pm mr C K R savage called the assemblage to order and the exercises of the day commenced mr john quigley acting as master of ceremonies the payson silver band gave a selection followed by prayer from father robert wimmer aged 90 the old next rendered a chorus in fine style followed by hail columbia lum biall by the combined Beri benjamin jamin and payson bands band I 1 governor A L thomas addressed the old folks he regretted that ha could not make himself heard in avery quarter of the grounds it was a grand spectacle to see so bo many aged persons persona pres present tnt notwithstanding the heat beat and he deemed it one of the greatest events of his life to be present among so many old people where ouch euch careful I 1 attention atten tio n respect and reverence were paid to them in other states gatherings of old persons persona were not uncommon but they could not equal utah in their concern for silvery hairs and bent forms there were present many of the original settlers of the valley persons who by their toil and labor paved the way to the comfort an and 1 I affluence enjoy ei e i by the present generation all honor respect and veneration were due these then aged veterans when they first beheld these valle valleys nothing but sand sage and alkali met the eye this morning meadows pasture fields and growing crops smiled on every side the result more otless orless of the early labors of these thee eold old people whom he be was ko io glad and proud to meet this was the fourth occasion of the kind at which he be had been present and he hoped by the aid of providence he be would meet the old folks many times in the future it was well that practical proof could be given in such a manner of the goodness in the human heart in thus honoring old a age e and paying respectful brierty pictured the transformation of the valley from the time it had only a few cabins to the present era of comfort plenty and even luxury which watt was now found thereon he paid a beautiful enthusiastically accorded Mayor Lemon of Payson spoke briefly but bat appropriately welcoming everybody to payson and hoping that mant reunions reunion would take place there in the future he was sure cure th that t if any persons persona were neglected it w was a not the fault of the payson committee but it must have arisen from mistake or of too much modesty on the part of visitors who foiled failed to make their wants known A vote of thanks to the payson ex committee was moved and carried unanimously mr W C dunbar gave two celeo bious with his bis caledonian band the highland pipes the rov bev A C todd presbyterian minister of payson delivered a brief address dwelling on the beauty good news nee and christianity of respect for the aged mrs J A linsdale gave a vocal solo entitled fathers Father ls growing old 91 9 counselor david john of utah stake made a few remarks saying baying that the originator of old folks day was blessed with an inspired idea that old age was deprived of all its terrors in such surroundings as an the present the presbyterian male quartette gave the selection im wandering down 22 brother C R savage then came to the front and presented every person in payson over 70 irrespective of creed or race with a gift of lome gome kind the salt bait lake people had a good time therefore they needed no presents he then introduced mrs rachel drollinger aged 84 as als the oldest lady on the grounds and presented her with some money a mirror and a number of other articles artillea arti olea which seemed to please the old lady imme immensely about aa a decorated with a number of medals they were not obtained in battles by sword or cannon but for industry at the loom and shuttle one was bronze given in 1879 for the best silk vest by the deseret agricultural society and another given in the same year for the best display of miscellaneous silks there were two gold medals given I 1 in 1891 for silk displays at the terr territorial I 1 fair and
