Show IS DR ILIFF consistent AMONG those who out conspicuous figures in the liberal territorial con bention ven tion yesterday was the rev bev dr iliff he was there in the dual capacity of chaplain and stump speechmaker in the course of his oration he expressed himself to the effect that he still held to his bis fealty to the liberal party 1 I am here said he in my conception of my full sense of duty as an american citizen 22 although some people hold that the active participation of a minister in political affairs smacks too much of an attempt to unite church and state especially when he appears in operations of that nature asa as a clergyman aa well as a politician we contend that dr iliff has a right to act in the capacity of a citizen and exercise his hie political rights in that relation if he desires ile eires to but he be places him self so conspicuously before the publio his bis words and acts are legitimate themes for criticism we hold that his course in many respects is so con can B and oo 00 contradictory bictory as to render him an object of commiseration thereto there is no need to make an elaborate statement of the epoch of whisky gambling prostitution and other vices vicea and violent crimes inaugurated and continued in two this city from the time the municipal government fell into the hands bands of the liberal party to the present every intelligent citizen among them dr iliff is aware of the detestable result of the rule of that party in salt bait lake in a mass man meeting hold held in or dr iliff s church to protest against the encouragement hagem ra ent of vice and crime by the city officials elected by the liberal illiberal 1 9 party mr iliff said never before had there existed in this thia city the necessity for a meeting of this thia character every lover of morals and good order 5 should use all the influence which he had and put himself squarely on the question under consideration the situation not only involved the reputation of the liberals in this thia city but in the nation abroad we pledged the countr country that if we obtained control we would in sure a better government than that which had so long existed now another rn municipal election lei is on and the same party has put up di a ticket concerning which or dr iliff placed himself on record in the salt bait lake tribune of yesterday morning as follows 1 I see the tribune has dropped two names from the list of liberal nomi nominees for city council it is in well and let it be kept up until some others disappear and then lot let the very best beat men in the precincts be substituted if the liberal council ticket stands as originally named and should be elected we can hope for no improvement on the present council here then is in a clear admission that the election ot of the liberal ticket now hoisted means a continuation of the same old rule of corruption against which the reverend gentleman entered a vigorous protest seeing that he cou COB to uphold and sustain the party which has brought the city to the verge of moral ruin and proposes to perpetuate the corruption to is he not a contributor to the detestable situation he be professes to abhor it dems impossible to derive other than an affirmative answer to this question dr iliff took exception to an tive five remark made recently in a speech by mr schroeder in reference to the liberal party which he character iced as can an unholy alliance of preachers profil gators and prostitutes the reverend gentleman indignantly dign antly exclaimed 1 I hurl back into his very face fac the false and degrading assertion we wish it understood der stood that we are not in sympathy with the wholesale denunciation indulged in by mr schroeder bob roeder it was too broad and in our view uncalled for and we do not wonder at the heat displayed by the preacher in resenting it there was another expression made by someone eso els which was never resented it was of the same character and almost equally insulting it was brought out by the agitation against the prevalence prevol onoe of drunkenness gambling and kindred vices super induced by the connivance of the liberal officials the preachers took a prominent part in that unsuccessful protestation among them was dr iliff whose remarks at one of the me meeting stings connected with the law and order agitation are quoted in this article the insult referred to was uttered by orlando W powers the head front and sides of the liberal party he informed dr iliff and his fellow preacher pro tse to tants that in regard to the campaign by which the obnoxious officiate officials were elected in february 1890 the saloonkeepers saloon keepers and gamblers were con bulled as aa well as aa the ministers and their desires had to be considered an aa well as those of the clergymen this imputation of an unholy alliance allian ceil 9 was coupled with the statement to the e effect sect that it was not necessary that salt bait lake city should be too good 20 this affront was never resented dr iliff so ready to vent his indignation at the imputation of mr schroeder Soh roeder has had no expression of wrath for as gross an insult of the same ame character from the political boss bon before whose dictum every liberal N must humbly bow or got get out of the ranks of the party why did not mr clift resent the contemptuous fling bing uttered by orlando W powers was it nt because ho he stands in abject fear of the czar of the liberal party A modicum of consistency from dr iliff would be refreshing |
