ye the lord I 1 my heart shall join in work so pleasant so BO divine prayer was waa offered by elder E tripp the choir and congregation sang the spirit of god like a fire is burning the latter day glory begins to come forth the priesthood of the eighth ward offic officiated in the administration of the sacrament APOSTLE ABRAHAM H CANNON was called to address the congregation he desired to give utterance to such ouch thoughts as the lord should put into his heart and he be wished the saints to assist him that he might be restrained from saying anything not in accordance with the mind of our heavenly father he was thankful for living among the latter day gai ints and in a country such as this when we consider the events that daily occur in the world we should feel happy for we are certainly the most favored of ai all people on the earth even leaving out of consideration the eternal blessings which have been promised to us we are certainly a most mosi favored people god blesses us in our homes and our lands and notwithstanding all trials we cannot help but feel that there is a providence in them we must acknowledge the hand of god and see how boyt marvelously he has been working for our good in all respects A few days ago the speaker had had bad a conversation with a missionary ju just at returned from the eastern states this man bad been out there to gather geneal I 1 as well as to preach the S gospel copel many years bad elapsed since he had bad visited his old home and he be had anticipated a great deal of pleasure in meeting again with old acquaintances and visiting familiar places but he be returned sadly disappointed and felt regret because of the changed conditions now prevailing in that part of our country where formerly were well cultivated farms farm are now forests where formerly were numerous schools school are now only a few required for the education of the children in places which once were divided into five school districts you would find only one now the exception was to find families with three or more children occasionally one or two were found but often people married lived together and died without any offspring offa pring the land has lost its fertility young men state that they are not able to obtain a living from a good sized farm this to is a sad picture the speaker observed and he could not help comparing the condition of that part ot of our country with that with which god has blessed us this land a few years ago was considered uninhabitable suitable only to the f indians and hardly capable of sustaining them yet et now it could be seen men on every hand that god has showered his blessings upon it and rewarded the toil of the people he has gathered from various parts carts of the earth it is as if he would present a cona to the nations of the earth thereby teaching all men and women that in accepting the revo revelations lations of god and keeping his commandments there are temporal as well as spiritual blessings god has indeed favored us wonderfully he has taught us principles whereby we are enabled to perpetuate a strong race in these valleys and even extend the age of man that we mily may live longer and attain more knowledge of the things nut not yet revealed it to is said that the average age of the people in this nation is fifty five years while in many countries in europe it is only thirty three it is also said that about fifty per cent of the children die in infancy and a great many of those who survive pass away before they reach manhood people not understand ing the physical laws which govern the perpetuation of the race violate these laws in various ways thereby transferring ferring diseases to their offspring the results of which are seen in the increased deaths sickness to is heard of on every hand and it looks as if it were only a question of a few years to see thu nation extinct through the increase of sickness and a disposition of parents to cease rearing offspring from many places people have sent abroad to scandinavia and other countries to get people to occupy the land which lies waste for want of cultivation men and women who have noticed these things have felt alarm for the future but god hax ha revealed his gospel not only for its spiritual salvation and the future glories which await the faithful but also to teach the people how bow to live in the flesh how bow to take care of themselves elves in a temporal way rhe fhe lord wants us to educate ou our melves and our children we should not wait until the children are born before teaching them to live but we should study how to take care of ourselves that no sin or its consequences may be transmitted from us to the third and fourth generation of our descendants we J observe the laws which god has given us and particularly ticul arly the word of wisdom whereby we are taught to refrain from the use of intoxicating drinks beverages encin order that we may walk and not become weary run and not become faint and that the great treasures of knowledge now hidden may be revealed and gods storehouse of truth be opened to us if we do not observe these laws we can never reach the high ideal it is our privilege to reach if through our disobedience to the laws of god we transmit diseases to our children they will surely be our accusers we cannot stand justified beaure them if we send them forth with weakened intellects and physical disability we ought to set our faces against everything that tends to destruction st and direct our minds mind towards that which pertains to life both here an and d hereafter gud god has always instructed his chi children id concerning their mode of living through moses he taught his ancient people in these things we too are his children and he will certainly give us similar instructions if we are willing to receive them but if we refuse to act upon his counsels and receive them not but disregard them we cannot hope to receive any more of his instructions the lord has called us out from the world to teach us ua a higher law pertaining to life here and hereafter in order that our children may live longer and may finally reach the high age which was enjoyed by the ancient patriarchs who walked with god for hundreds of years but he desires us to live pure lives and to root out every evil from our midst we should seek for the testimony ofa esus the most valuable ablo I 1 pearl of great price that can be obtained by a human being but having received this we cannot disregard the things which god has taught us tie in regard to so this life when a man or a woman seeks knowledge by study and the exercise of faith god will give it but those who disregard the physical laws cannot receive knowledge as those cama cache who keep these laws god has many blessings in store for us if we only will prepare ourselves fortham for them letus let w therefore be diligent and free from evils of all kinds showing to the world that we are the sainta of god indeed PRESIDENT GEORGE Q CANNON addressed the congregation dwelling principally upon the practical duties of the people the choir sang the anthem let the mountains shout for joy jap and the congregation gre gation joined the choir in the doxology benediction was pronounced by elder D ldavis L davis religious services were held at the Tater tabernacle nacle salt lake city sunday november 29 commencing at 2 p m president angus M cannon presiding d ing there were present on the stand apostle A H cannon patriarch john smith john morgan of the presidency of the seventies A M cannon and C W penrose of the stake presidency and several leading elders also rev A J bailey pastor of the congregational church at ogden the choir on this occasion was composed of nearly children from the various ward sunday schools in the city led by professor evau evan stephens stephen the juvenile choir sang the anthem light and truth prayer was waa offered by counselor charles chariot W penrose the juvenile choir sang the hymn begin beginning nina jesus once of humble birth now in glory cornea comes to earth the priesthood of the ninth ward officiated on dated in the administration of the lords supper ELDER JOHN MORGAN said he had been requested to occupy a portion of the time that afternoon and expressed his gratification at meeting with so large a number of the saints on the occasion in their gathering together they were wholly dependent on the spirit which led into an all truth for their light and thought because without it they had learned that man in his bis weak weakness news was not capacitated to gain information or instruction itt in relation to the plan of life and salvation but however weak an instrument he might be god in his power and authority was sufficient to make him an expounder on the truth an instrument in his hip hands bands of enlightening the minds of his hio children upon earth we were told in holy writ that god took of the weak things of the earth to proclaim the principles of eternal life and in the history of his dealings with the children of men from the beginning down to today he had bad taken as his messengers and servants his prophets and apostles those from the outer and lowlier walks of life and made them his mouthpieces to mankind to proclaim to the world principles of inestimable value that had had the tendency to better the condition of the human family and in the end result in their salvation in this he had bad exemplified that god should havo the glory that it is not in the strength of unan n that he relies and by example cla taught his children here below that other law which says cursed is he be who mabeth mans arm his strength the speaker read from 1 I corinthians chapter and three thre following and god bath set cometh the church first apostles secondarily prophets thirdly teachers after that miracles miracle then gifts gifts of healing helps governments diversities of tongues are all apostles are all prophets are all teachers are all workers of miracles have all the gifts of healing do all speak peak with tongues do all interpret but covet earnestly the best gifts and yet show I 1 unto you a more excellent way then rhen the apostle in the fame chapter says saye for as the body is one and bath many members members and all the members of that one body being many are one body so alao is christ for by one spirit are we all baptized eed into one body whatsoever gift gd bath given to t the individual all those individuals have severally been made par takers of one spirit not a diversity of spirit tp that testimony which came to the t A postle came also to the prophet and to the worker of miracles wherefore he saith when he ascended up on high he led cap captivity vIty captive and gave gifts unto men I 1 I 1 now that he ascended what is it but that he be also descended into into the lower parts of the earth he that descended is the same also that ascended far up above all heavens that he be might fill all things and he gave some apostles and some prophets and some evangelists evangelist and and some pastors and teachers there was no diversity of testimony then upon this quest question IOD all united in the one testimony that god lived that jesus of nazareth was the savior of the world testifying that the work in which they were engaged was the work of god testifying to the necessity of faith repentance and the turning of men from the evil of their ways testifying to the necessity of baptism by immersion for the remission of or forgiveness of their sius to the necessity of the laying on of hands for the reception of the holy ghost that should show them things to come that should bring things put past to their remembrance membra mem brance uce and that should lead guide and direct them unto all truth they to whom the oracles of god were were given who as they were moved upon by the holy ghost alike testified alike taught the same principles were united in the teaching of those principles anti and as a result of this union the body of the church was likened to the body of an individual whose limbs moved in unison one portion of the body being not in antagonism with the other but all parts working in harmony this was in accordance with a natural law with the law of god whereby he had bad organized his church upon the earth that when one member was injured all the members were injured together the injury was felt by the whole body of the this was because of the mem members beitz bein so entirely united and blended As A s the blood of the body of a man penetrates his whole being from the crown of the head to the sole of the foot so the spirit of god permeated the whole church from him who stood at the head bead of it down to the very least individual member so the holy spirit gave life light and intelligence to that entire body and an injury inflicted upon any part of it affected the whole proceeding further to illustrate elder morgan said they had all doubtless listened to the testimony of some of their aged brethren who lived at the time of the assassination of the prophet joseph at a grest great distance from where that event yet at the time the prophet was slain they felt evil influences around them almost as perceptible at as had the prophet of god himself and in the hour when the powers of darkness combined to slay him they went i nto into the by places adjacent to where they then resided knelt down and prayed to their father in heaven to protect the body of the church to pro hect his saints and his work in which they were engaged so should it be and so was it with the body of the church today a any uy injury affecting one portion touched the whole and when the world asked the question why it was that the latter day saints were so thoroughly and completely united they could answer because it to is a natural law and it would be impossible for it to be otherwise not only were these principles true but the sympathy of a man should go out beyond his own body he should also sympathize with those who were not connected therewith sympathize with suffering humanity everywhere and under all circumstances he should weep with those who had cause to mourn rejoice with those who had cause tx to rejoice and look with charity upon the degraded condition of faller fallen humanity as it was today desiring to extend a helping hand to raise it and help it to a higher plane into a purer sunlight and brighter day than humanity had had bad in the past seeking to sustain and uphold the band of those who sought to do good to their fellow men and to bring about a reign of righteousness whose desire was to redress wrong and aad prevent the consummation of wrong so the body of this church inspired bv by this spirit desired the salvation of the whole human family to do good unto all mankind their one aim was to braug men to a knowledge of the truth placing the carrying of glad tidings of great boyll joy to the ends of the earth foremost the speaker went onto on to show what the elders Elder of the church who had gone forth as missionaries h id been ready and willing to endure for the gospels goepel va sake in the persecutions with which some of them had bad met he be said history had but repeated it itself in the latter day proclamation As in the former days so had it been in this our day nevertheless the sound of the gospel had gone to the nations of the earth with the immediate effect that there had been gathered together in these valleys of the mountains thousands of those who believed in that proclamation Some men had seen proper to contend and fight against the work of god lo in which the latter day saints were engaged while others though not embracing it had befriended it and spoken a good word for zion they had bad extended a protecting hand to the elders had given them food ral |
