Show CAPTAIN PARKER SHOT BY GEO ALBRIGHT captain parker of the police depart this city was shot and killed b by officer george albright at VIV nov 27 midway between the city hall and the the corner of state and first south streets W the tragedy was the result of an old w feud it wm will bp be remembered by the readers of the NEWS newil that officer albright gave eVid evidence once before the police committee which reflected upon cap tain parkers official conduct A quarrel subsequently ensued between them and it is alleged that the captain threatened on several occasions to kill albright udder these cir circumstances curn they have been very suspicious of each other albright Albrig bt generally avoided meeting parker except when it was absolutely necessary for him to receive orders from hea headquarters e quarters on tuesday evening october the city council passed an ordinance abolishing the office of police captain the measure was to take effect today captain parker however did not intend to vacate and expressed himself to that effect to a reporter on wednesday last he said be intended to test the legality of the ordinance and declared that he be would be even with his opponents yet the matter evidently weighed heavily on his bis mind for he spoke of it to his bis friends several times yesterday last night he attended a prize fight and it is said drank copiously and instead of going home borne remained down town all night A person who was in his hie company at 2 this morning states that he was q quite u I 1 e I 1 intoxicated u at that time it has long been the custom of capt parker to go to police headquarters at 9 am a m this morning however was an exception to this rule be having appeared at the city hall before daylight shortly after 6 hemelt he meet sergeant donovan Dono vau so the latter states in the main corridor leadin leading to the marshals office and said john the papers say that I 1 am no longer captain of the police force but I 1 want you and your pals and the reports to understand that I 1 am still the incumbent of that office more than that I 1 want you to recognize me as such 1 I shall always do so as long as you remain responded afterward and left the hall le he paced restlessly to and fro on the sidewalk between the building and the corner for several ml minutes a and glanced nervously about him near the northwest corner tell you that you did not you G d d d lying a of a b 11 ais aft parker made this statement he be drew a revolver and albright sail quickly for gods sake captain I 1 dont do that parker hesitated a moment and then struck albright a heavy blow over the head with his bis pistol the latter dropped his club and attempted to draw his ble pistol parker then pointed his revolver directly at Alti Al brights tights head and pulled the trigger but for some reason the cartridge did not explode by this time albright Albrig bt bad pulled his revolver and immediately fired I 1 the shot taking effect in parkers right arm midway between tire the elbow and i boulder the bone was badly frac wed tau ed and the wounded limb fell to his side anu and his pistol to the pavement instantly however be picked it up with his left hand when albright fired a second time but the shot went wide of its mark the bullett bullet plowing a course along the board fence for a distance of several feet parker had by this time so far recovered himself as an to get his bis revolver again into position for shooting but albright was too quick for him and fired the bullet bulitt entering the right gidej side of his abdomen about three inches from the navel parker fell forward with a groan A fourth shot was fired as he be struck the pavement some gome say by parker but others say that albright I 1 did all the shooting I 1 parkers parker Is body was immediately conveyed to the city hall ball and stretched upon the court room floor dr meacham was sent for tout but the wounded man bad expired before his bis arrival the coroner was sent for and took charge of the body which was removed mo ved to the morgue of the U utah tab U undertaking u der taking company near the st james hotel hundreds of curious people followed the dead wagon P an inquest was set for 3 this afternoon after the shooting officer albright Albrig bt gave himself up and was looked locked in the females ward of the city jail where the wounds on his head were dressed by the city physician it was rumored among the off officers iders 0 of f the department that the cartridges had bad been withdrawn by some person from captain parkers parker Is pistol during the highland night and replaced by blan blOn kones this report gave rise to a suspicion that there had been foul play and great excitement prevailed an effort was made to see and examine the weapon but it had been taken charge of by marshal young and that officer had gone off on official business some say that the rumor is entirely untrue but one officer stated that he be thought it was correct and proposed that the matter should be properly ventilated at the coroners coroner in inquest an effort was made by a reporter to interview albright but he be was advised to remain silent on the subject of the homicide the deceased was about fifty years old and had been a resident of this territory for fifteen years for some time he be acted as a guard at the penitentiary he was once 1 did not know this until all was over he kept snapping at me and every time be did so I 1 thought I 1 should be killed I 1 fired two shots probably four and parker fell to the sidewalk exclaiming i 8 3 yesterday afternoon coroner harris held bold an n inquest over the remains of captain W B parker who was shot near the city hall by officer george georg albright at yet yesterday erday morning joseph T darke mark mckimmins and E 0 1 ivana A na were sworn as jurors attorney W C reilly beilly represented the deceased slayer county and assistant county attorneys murphy and eich eichnor nor appeared in behalf or of the prosecution hundreds of people gathered in front of the utah u undertaking establishment where the inquest was being conducted and it was found necessary for the officers jo to keep them back representatives senta tives of the press attorneys and witnesses only were admitted the first witness 8 was ARTHUR FAGER lagergreen GREEN a motorman on the first south street car line of the city railway company he testified I 1 witnessed the trouble between Cat captain tain parker and officer albright AJ bright each struck the other a number of blows after which they separated and drew their revolvers three shots were fired in rapid succession and after a brief pause there was a fourth shot and captain parker staggered and fell to the pavement I 1 was standing on the opposite side of the street from where the trouble oc ac purred and could see everything when parker fell I 1 crossed the street und and helped carry the city hall during the encounter both men ward off the blow at the same time exclaiming look out look out drop thakill that albright Albrig bt sprang backwards a few steps and then drew his bis revolver and commenced firing sufficient time elapsed after parker pointed bis big gun at albright for him to have killed the latter before he drew his bis gun four shots were fired I 1 know that one of them was fired by captain parker as I 1 saw the flash from his pistol I 1 cannot say who fired the first shot As soon as captain parker was wounded he backed up to a shade tree and exclaimed I 1 1 I am batill hit H he stood still for a moment and then reeled and fell and was cari ried to the city hall where he expired within a few minutes after the shooting DR testified myself and dr ewing made apost a post mortem examination of captain parkers Far kers remains we discovered a compound comminuted com fracture of the right arm the bone was shattered into a great number of pieces A second wound was found about four and a half inches to the right and in aline a line with the navel the direction taken by the ball was backward and downward it perforated the intestines five times and severed the iliac artery this filled the abdomen with blood which when we made the examination was in a clotted condition the ball lodged in the muscles of the loft left hip death was probably due to hemorrhage dr ewsuk was called and corroborated the of this police force and I 1 want these to know knowlt it by request I 1 straightened his collar and tie which had been disarranged he then left the building and in less than two minutes I 1 heard beard a number of pistol shots fired in rapid succession I 1 exclaimed to sergeant mccurdy my god billy what is that thata tJ we both ran from thel the building and reached the doorway just in ti time me to see captain parker tall to the ground I 1 saw albright with a revolver in his bis hand the blood was streaming down his bis face and I 1 said george who to is shot you or the captain captai nV he replied 1 I dont know I 1 guess we are both shot I 1 then spoke to parker but he made no reply bat only gasped and fell back dead we then cawed him to the city hall and took into custody parker was of a quarrelsome dispo disposition sitton when tie he had been drinking OFFICER testified I 1 was about a block away when the shooting occurred I 1 hastened to the scene of the killing and assisted in adjournment was then until 11 a m today THE INQUEST the coroners jury resumed th ing of testimony at noon today frederick lisle testified I 1 31 8 standing near the city hall on pit morning about 7 saw parker come out of the ball and i to and fro on the sidewalk 1 U state street parker ba baited ne A corner and waited for officer alb I 1 who was coming toward him ho froe west I 1 heard beard
