Show WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT IT is generally hoped that mayor scott will investigate the police matter fully it is not believed that all the blame rests with the men who hold prominent places in the service it is in easy for subordinates to make complaint against their officers and a man would have to be pretty nearly perfect to satisfy all his bis subordinates it does not follow because two prominent officers have been adjudged in fault that the men who complained against them are clear from blame the mayor is rightly clothed with authority to appoint and remove policemen in the exercise of that power he should not be influenced by fear or favor or by uninformed public senty senn ment and if he finds that tha toome dome of the complaining fineu men as well as those complained against are deserving of censure or removal he should take prompt action in their case just as though no public remarks had bad been made about the probability of their 0 being fired because they had presented their grievances men should not bo discharged for the rf reason that they had made charges against their captain and sergeant unless it were proved that they haa had lied about them but for inefficiency 17 7 chency insubordination habit ual profanity failure to pro form duty or some conduct incompatible with their position the mayor ought to act firmly and with full regard to the public welfare and the people ought to support him in every official act performed with a true desire to promote peace and good order |
