bishops sixteen young men received certificates authorizing their ordination to the office of elders after promising to honor and magnify said office and calling if ordained APOSTLE ABRAHAM H CANNON regretted to notice the small attendance at the opening meeting of this conference notwithstanding the busy season the saints would profit and not dot lose anything by laying their work aside and attending meetings while we are commanded of the lord not to steal lie commit adultery etc the sin of omission or neglect of duty is also a grevious grev loua sin in the sight of the almighty juthe the carelessness and sleepiness exhibited by the latter day saints at the present time seem to testify to the near approach of the coming of the savior according to the parable of the ten virgins which indicates that at the time all would slumber and sleep B but ut the saints should take heed to keep 0 oil 11 in their lamps even if they may to some extent be overcome by that general drowsiness which seems to prevail the saints should be more diligent in attending their meetings and by their exemplary lives prove to the world that they are sincere in espousing what is commonly called mormonism the fact that this stake of zion contains over thirty thousand saints and scarcely two thousand of them being present at this meeting is a very unsatisfactory sli showing owing there are some however who are always at their posts and found wherever duty calls them and they are the ones whom the lord delights in and whom lie ile desires to bless the speaker testified that president wilford woodruff was an inspired man of god GO and those who were continually finding fault with the doings of the first presidency and the leaders of the people were dolne doing so without just cause and were standing on dangerous ground as these men were laboring continually in the interest of zion the fhe speaker predicted the final triumph of the cause of god and that the time would come when n zion should become the glory of the whole earth the roll of the stake was then called and responded to by all the members of the presidency of the quorum twelve presidents of seventies and fourteen home missionaries all the wards in the stake were pro properly aly represented excepting the tenth and twenty second city wards and farmere south cottonwood sandy and pleasant green of the country wards the relief belief societies sabbath schools school young mens and young ladle 83 mutual improvement associations and the primary organizations were represented by their respective presiding officers the minutes of the priesthood meeting were read by counselor C W penrose and were approved by unanimous vote BISHOP ELIJAH F SHEETS being called upon addressed the conference and alluded to the introduction of worldly habits among the saints saint and how some of those who had formerly been zealous and active in the service norvice of god were now partaking of the general spirit of carelessness but notwithstanding this the cause of god will prevail upon the earth a great reform will take plaze place among the saints and the final victory be on the side of truth BISHOP GEORGE ROMNEY referred to the introduction of the gospel to great britain in 1837 his parents being among those who first embraced the falness of the gospel near preston england where he be also was ba ban sized as an eight year 0 oad boy he still remembered the diligence and zeal exhibited in these early days by the converts in that land and also remembered how punctual the saints sain ta in nauvoo were in congregating together to listen to words of inspiration from the lips of the prophet joseph and other men of god The speaker bore testimony to the truth of the gospel and that the blessings and gifts of the same were still within the reach of those who would magnify their callings and live up to their privileges as latter day saints and there are many such in the church today ELDER JOSEPH H FELT reminded the young brethren who had been called to the Melchi sedek priesthood today of the duties that wo would devolve upon them after being ordained elders in the church he exhorted the saints to awaken to a better realization of their duties the Y M M I 1 associations of this stake over which the speaker presides were in good working order although no meetings had been held during the summer mo months nth they would be resumed again during the present month A number of young youn g men had been called to labor as aa missionaries among the associations during the coming winter they were to devote all their time inthis direction the same as missionaries going abroad PRESIDENT ANGUS M CANNON after giving the young men who were to be ordained elders some timely instructions then announced that the conference would be adjourned until 2 pm the choir sang lo 10 I 1 the mighty god appearing an announcement was made that a special meeting of scandinavians would be beldin the social hall tomorrow morning at t 9 benediction by counselor joseph E taylor saturday afternoon session conference convened at 2 p m the choir and congregation sang how firm arm a foundation etc prayer by elder wm win taylor the choir sang on the mountains top appearing etc ELDER ELDEB ELIAS MORRIS president of the high priests quorum reported that that body of the priesthood were holding interesting meetings which were well attended ln ve lectures were given occasion ally the speaker invited those seventies I 1 who were too old and feeble for active service in missionary fields to identify themselves them with the high priests quorum w where here they would be made welcome the saints should bould patronize the church schools as the only institutions of education where the children of the latter day saints could get a thorough training in the doctrines of the church the good results of the past labors in these schools ap e testified to by those who have hav tried them and since many of the people in this alake stake of zion are wealthy the latter day saints college for which buildings and grounds brounda costing twenty five thousand dollars have just been purchased should receive the support of all such in particular and of the saints generally BISHOP ROBERT DANSIE of Herr herriman imaD referred to the great change which had taken place in the a appearance pe arance of the country on the west side side of the river jordan in this valley during the last four years through the blessings of the lord the saints should be wisp wise in the manipulation of their temporal affairs and avoid the contracting of unnecessary debts by which they would bring themselves in bondage BISHOP WM A BILLS of south jordan referred to his bis long experience in the church during which he be had learned to prize the principles of the gospel above everything else and he bore his testimony to their truth ELDER ROBERT MORRIS spoke about the promises of the lord concerning the great latter day work and their fulfilment fulfillment and also gave a 4 good report of the condition of the saints in the eleventh ward where he resided BISHOP DAVID B of big cottonwood said that the majority of the people in his ward were striving riving at to live their religion and attend to their meetings end and other duties BISHOP WM C ALLEN of draper referred to his arrival in this valley when four years old since which he had been identified with the ibe saints here ind and rejoiced in his knowledge ot of the truth of the gospel the time had now come which so long had been alluded to by the vet rans erans of the church that the burden of the rolling forth of the kingdom should test rest upon the shoulders iw of the younger elders the responsible positions now filled by young men in the church proves this tact fact BISHOP WM L N ALLEN ra of th the a Twenty first ward salt lake city gave a good report of his big ward there were a large number of poor in that part of the city including many widows but they were not allowed to suffer for the want of the necessaries of life the different organizations of the ward were in good working order and were a great help to the bishop and his couns counselors elore BISHOP JOSEPHS JOSEPH S RAWLINS of south cottonwood reported over thirteen hundred saints in his ward who were keeping pace with the surrounding wards A good and commodious church school building had bad been erected within the limits of the ward for the accommodation of the saints residing in the more central part of salt sat lake valley and there were good prospects for having a good school kept there this coming winter BISHOP WILLIAM THORNE of the seventh ward salt lake city related some of his bis experience from the time when wh en he as a little boy wras waa thrust out into a cold and unfeeling world and he felt thankful for the comfort which the gospel of christ subsequently had afforded him he having spent the last forty years of his life in the church and presided as bishop of the seventh ward twenty years of that time the different organizations of his bis ward were doing a good work COUNSELOR JOS JOB E TAYLOR propounded the question what shall we do with our boys and proceeded to show the condition of the sons of zion at the present time the salt lake stake is a very larg otake of Zio nand should the presided of the same do justice to their calling it would be necessary for them to spend all their time for the public go good 0 d in attending the different ward conferences throughout the stake the speaker had found union and harmony existing between P residing presiding officers and the people generally er ally the relief belief societies and other organizations instituted for the benefit of both young and old should be allotted a proper degree of freedom and independence de pen dence in their respective associations that they might have a chance to progress upon their own judgment and wisdom the sabbath schools throughout the stake were as a rule in fair conditions but there was still a lack of good and efficient beachem tea chepo in several places the young ladles ladies mutual improvement associations should discourage extravagance in dress and the members not pattern after the fashion of the world the primary associations should be encouraged as they were most important helisto helps to the priesthood in the work of the minds of the young and leading them in the path of duty and the fear of the lord the examples of the bishops and leading men of the respective wards has a very great deal to do 40 with the general conditions f affairs in such wards I 1 as the people are very apt to copy largely after their leaders for as with the priests so with the people the choir joined by the congregation sang praise to the man who communed with jehovah dr benediction by bishop ishmael phillips 0 the conference then adjourned till lo 10 am am sunday sunday Hera lux sept 6 the conference convened again in the tabernacle at 10 am president angus M cannon presiding the choir and congregation sang the hymn do what is ie right the day dawn Is breaking railing hailing a future ot of freedom and light liggat prayer by elder ellas elias morris the choir sang corn com dearest lord descend and dwell by irth faith and love in every breast BISHOP HEBER BENNION of north jordan was the first a speaker he said he be hoped to be assisted IDY by the spirit of the lord while attempting to make a statement relative to the oon coni of the north jordan ward the ia ward has all the organizations that have been formed in order to carry out the work of the church of christ and they are all in good working order the mutual improvement associations are doing much good the people are learning a little every year there may be a tendency to regard the meetings with less lesa inter 1 est now than formerly but on the whole chule the association s are successful in uniting the young the sunday school is very active and it has been our endeavor to grade the classes somewhat similar to the church schools an arrangement which has proved very satisfactory the relief belief society is doing a good work among the poor although there fortunately are very few that need an any pecuniary assistance in our wary ward the teachers are doing their best beat in looking after the people and attending their meetings the speaker referred to the many temptations that now surround the people of god on every banda hand and saw said that the lord no doubt wants to have lesve a tried people he knows how much each one can bear of temptation and will not suffer anybody to be beyond his streng strength tb adt we must not rush into temptations and then blame somebody else for our fall we must pray pram y that we fall not and avoid evil so society clety if we do this god will do hla at part BISHOP ORSON OKSON r F WHITNEY was the next speaker he could not hotl say that great changes had taken pi place in his ward since the last stake conference unless it was waa the ces of some to spiritual duties thai seems to be a characteristic feature during the hot season we ought to be ashamed as latter day saints that S we cannot berve god as faithfully in ili the summer as in the winter he did not think however that the majority S of the people in the ward not in the tl church at large neglect their re i ligion in this manner I 1 mere here is in the eighteenth ward a good gooda sunday school with faithful men in charge of it the mutual im provement pro associations have not yet commenced their meetings this season the relief belief society is ie doing well we W also have a good primary tion the ward has a church school with an enrolment of a little less leas than pupils and the school gives good satisfaction religious training trai nine the speaker speake thought was particularly necessary at 1 11 14 1 abie time when a
