Show JACKSONS DAY the ath day of january is ia becoming a sort of national holiday it was on this day 1816 1815 that the famous battle of new orleans was fought andrew jackson commanded the american forces sir edward packenham brother in law of the duke of wellington commanded the english troops the english left 2600 soldiers dead and wounded on the field while the loss on the american side was eight killed and thirteen wounded nive reary of this battle is becoming a democratic holiday with andrew jackson as the saint of the occasion last night at the federal court room this event was commemorated for the first time in salt lake city the room was comfortably fort ably filled by what seemed to be enthusiastic jacksonian democrats the meeting last night was held under the auspices of the central democratic club of salt lake city F H dyer ex marshal presided gd judge judd parley L williams and colonel lett occupied aate F on the bench at mr dyer called the meeting to order stating that the object of the meeting was the commemoration of the battle ot of new orleans and the perpetuation of the fame of andrew jackson parley li williams was next introduced his speech was a life sketch of andrew jackson stating that the hero was born of irish I 1 rish parents on the borders of the carolinas Caron nas in 1767 mr williams touched briefly on the principal events of jacksons life concluding with his death at the hermitage near nashville tenn on june the ath 1845 next followed judge judythe Judd the orator of the evening his oration was a history of the democratic party he consulted several large volumes reading extracts to show that democracy wu infallible and imperishable he gave a synopsis ot of what he considered were democratic principles then said how can we come to evil if such principles inci ples are maintained here adhering I 1 ng to these principles the democratic party has baa manal managed Ked to live and will oon con dinue to live and whenever the party has adhered to these these principles it has achieved success suj cess eess the party pany has had to deal with the national whig Know nothing abolition and republican parties it it has destroyed the parties that opposed it in the past and if it lives up to jeffersons ideas it will destroy the republican party cheers other parties may come and go but when the american flag shall wrap its folds about this dead republic it will ber be at the same time the winding sheet of the democratic party it has been en said the democratic party is s neither subject to death nor open to new ideas it certainly is not subject to death at this point the audience did not bot know how bow to take the orators opinion that his party was impervious to new ideas and it kept quiet wondering what was to come next again the hostility theory to new ideas was repeated but this time the speaker ex himself he said that his party already had all the ideas necessary to a free people and free government and that it only required the enlargement lar gement of these ideas V embrace all the demands of modern progress and civilization this pleased the jack lonians and there was loud applause the remainder of the oration was a defense of free trade and an exhortation to propagate democratic party principles in utah he said we enjoy our politics as a methodist minister does his religion the placing of true democratic principles before the people of utah is one of our aims and we serve notice on all who would combat us that the war is open but our club does not propose to mix up with the unfortunate local complications whatever our individual members may do on their own account 11 the speaker quoted from the platform of the democratic club saying that religious toleration should be observed but that religion must not be used as a cloak for crime the chief incident of note in the oration was the bold declaration of war on OB the part of the salt lake democracy ca acy this declaration was couched in unmistakable terms and it made a small sensation several persons left the hall but this might have been due to the fact that tb jbf hour wan waft getting late slid and the speaker was a trifle prosaic and heavy at this point the judge announced his intention of coming to f close and kept his word he did not act like his methodist ministers who after making a similar announcement started on a new topic and with renewed w wind ind orated for an hour more the judge did not do this but promptly took his seat dr H J faust then called for three cheers for the speakers of the night they were given but not as forcibly as one would expect in a jacksonian in m eting there was a band in attendance but it ii appeared long before the close of the proceedings |
