| Show THE T HE responsibility is an attempt in some quarters to place the responsibility for the lawless condition of affairs now existing in this city upon the police department this position is illogical and arturd the chief responsibility necessarily rests reste upon the leading officials the mayor and city council to prove our proposition is simple the officers of the police department part ment are i appointive from the chief to the sm smallest ablest officer on the force hence the department is the creature of the mayor and council if there to is inefficiency and corruption either at the head or in the ranks of the force the government have placed it there consequently they we are responsible or rather ought to be to the people for the malfeasance and dereliction that are openly claimed to ex exist jet seeing that the condition has been produced by the council it to Is their duty to remove it but this will never be done until the council itself to is made strictly a legal body it has not that virtue now six of its members are am usurpers usurp ers occupants of seats seab to which they were never elected those half dozen alleged councilmen are an open and standing reproach to their party we repent repeat what we have asserted heretofore if those who claim to be so deeply exercised over the laxity of the laws enforcement and the multiplication of dens of f vice in our fair city are sincere si they will move toward a request for the resignation of the political interlopers interlope rs bythe by the way we do not find a multitude ng to oppose our prop position tiou ion there to is no claim that these six men were elected on the contrary we were assured from the beginning by numbers of the better clan of liberals liberal that the sent seating of these men was an outrage and that the peoples peopled candidates who were clearly elected would doubtless get their rights when we stated to them that we thought we knew their party better than they themselves did and that they were la Ia Loring under an erroneous impression they were not only surprised but almost indignant perhaps some of or those gent gentlemen ledien will be kind enough to call around and frankly admit that our estimate of the virtue of the liberal party as a whole was more just than theirs C now let someone kindly press his head against the canvas of the political tent by asserting that the liberal candidates from the second and fourth precincts ere elected that we may raise a lump on his cranium with a blow from judge zanes decision |
