Show THE COUNTY ELECTION the following is from the EVENING NEWS of august otti there was a lively interest in the election today and reports from all parts that can be reached show that a full vote is being polled in salt lake county in august 1889 the vote was people liberal ral 2560 am 60 people majority in the county in the city the vote stood in august 1889 people liberal total first precinct soo 1221 third fourth PM fifth totals 2054 liberal IA beral majority malo rity 0 o 36 ip february the city vote was peo people me liberal 19 total first precinct 1207 7 second 1237 1227 1869 third oo fourth 0 fifth totals tot als 1853 1833 2883 liberal majorey 0 o 1030 in the city precincts today the following is the record FIRST PRECINCT at two there was a total of votes of these the liberals claimed a majority of about 40 the irbie strength of the peoples party voters came to the polls before that hour and it was conceded that most of those yet to come coine would be liberal jake greer wald one oae of the liberal judges of election gave it as his opinion thattie that the liberals would havea have a majority of less than in the first precinct up to the hour named about twenty five men had bad discovered that their names llad had abma erased from the registration list hit but none had been restored the peoples vote gave promise of being heavy and it was boli believed eved the Working mens ticket was receiving generous support all was quiet and not much motion friction had occurred in ono one caw can an individual presented himself and aye 4 a dimp niante pi on the registration list he was challenged for non residence and sworn where do you live in the tenth ward how long have you lived there 53 after some hesitation 1 I slept there last night 3 were you ever there before no I 1 was down on the D R G how many came up with youa you hesitatingly about 20 11 the challenge was sustained and the other 20 will probably go to the twentieth ward where vhf re challenges were not allowed by liberal 1 judges this afternoon at the first prec precinct luct three negroes were challenged and the challenge was sustained at p m the total vote w was as of this the peopled people Is men claimed a majority of 20 SECOND PRECINCT up to three there had been cast juat just about 1159 1150 votes in the second precinct of these the liberal checkers conceded to the peoples peopled party about or something less than claiming that the rest would be divided between the liberal and working mens tickets no man was found at the polls who would venture a guess gues sasto as to the relative strength of the two it was obvious that the Working mens ticket was having many supporters but how many could not be estimated with any degree of certainty several cases of personating had occurred the registration officer bf L dykes acting under instructions from the utah commission was reinstating instating re names improperly erased from the registration lists he said had been stricken n off and representatives of the peoples peopled party prevailed upon him to have an interview with the commission chairman godfrey said that every name unjustly erased should be restored it was hoped to accomplish this in most cases THIRD PRECINCT in this place the gross outrage committed by the contemptible individual appo appointed as registrar was allowed to stand there were about 20 names left off the registration list unlawfully by george lambourne they were all Peo peopled pleIs party men of course and when the order of the utah commission stating that such names should be replaced was issued the voters presented themselves to lambourne and asked for their rights he refused to grant their request and the utah commission was again applied to today the commission directed the deputy registrar appointed by them to perform his duty and place time names on the list at 1 pm today votes had bad been cast in the third precinct of this number the liberals were credited with and the people with the number of workingmen mens tickets was not known but whatever there were would reduce the number accredited to the liberals there were twelve challenges tor for polygamy pa the Libe liberal judges violated the law by sustain ing the challenges notwithstanding the feet fact that the parties challenged are not now in polygamy and have not been for years later at votes had been cast of which the literals brals claimed about 30 names had been improperly stricken from the list of which five or six had been restored and efforts were being made to have others placed on the list again on the july list there were 1145 names indication indica that the vote in this precinct is not extra heavy for the hour named FOURTH PRECINCT at the twentieth war schoolhouse the total vote was poll I 1 having and poll 2 numbering tile the liberal judges at af this precinct adopted a new rule in re lation to challenges this was doubtless to cover a development made at the school elections when about twenty five persons were sent back because they did not reside in the precinct under the new rule none of this number could be examined thus making the challenge valueless the judges would refuse to put on oath anyone challenged for non residence and would allow him to vote in one case that of thomas woolsey the vote was received notwithstanding the fact that woolsey moved out of the precinct before election day it was also alleged that the registrar had put on the lists names of persons 90 us who had not before been regu an e estimate of the political complexion of the voters gives the people liberals this is not taking into account the Working mens ticket which seemed to be having a large following FIFTH PRECINCT next to the second the fifth precinct bad the most noisy element but it was all talk there was no indication of anything more than a wordy war among some of the radical adherents of the 11 t liberal 11 and Working mens party representatives of the first named exhibiting a considerable sid erable amount of bluster the voting was beav heavy beavy y at this preci precinct Det and challenges were allowed in the usual way at 2 pm poll 1 showed ballots poll 2 had bad and poll 3 had making a total of of this number about were peopled People 8 and the remainder Working mens and liberals 11 the voters of the first named party were about aboud all in the indications on the vote at the hours named are that the people have cast about one half of the vote polled in the county and that between them and the liberals if the polls had then been closed the r suit would have been in doubt with chances in favor of the people during the remainder of the day it is probable that tile the number cast by the people would be less than that of the alie liberals if the Working mens ticket has drawn 50 percent per cent of the votes claimed by its ita supporters supporter at the polls today there Is no doubt ot of the election of a ma bority of its what tte strength of the new fiew ay is however cannot be count tonight the following Is 18 from the NEWS of august ath the election is over but the final result is afar far from determined owing to a failure thus far to ta get the exact figures from two or three outlying precincts like fort herriman and and so close is the vote that a few ballots either way would change the outcome there Is a certainty however that A J burt and J H rumel jr candidates on the Working mens and peoples peopled tickets for sheriff and recorder are elected by safe majorities and hank barnes barneo and col page are snowed under it ife Is also probable that fergus Eer gaBon and J B toronto candidates eandi candi dats for clerk and treasurer are elected on the face of the returns now iu in this is an assured fact and C E allen alien and J E galllgher galligher are very likely to be relegated to oblivion the liberal candidates for assessor selectman coroner an aal I 1 surveyor have very small majorities and as these there have been gained by frauds there may be a contest over the office walter murphy the liberal candidate cpr county attorney was sure of election from the first as the people and Woe workingmen kingmen separated on this office the former voting for 8 A kenner and the latter for J H hurd mr hurds vote represents the strength of the independent Working mene mens party about in the county the fact 1 of sheriff burt and mr bu met mel going so far ahead of j their tickets indicates that not even the vigorously plied liberal lash jaw could force all of that party coq follow i ing to disregard the marked ability of the candidates for sheriff and ra M A corder on the opposition ticket in addition to the votes recorded ak 0 various precincts
