Show priesthood MEETING the regular monthly meeting of the priesthood of the salt lake stake of zion convened in the As demply hall at 11 am today july ath 1890 there were present on the stand of the stake presidency joseph E taylor and charles W penrose of the presiding bishopric of the church william B preston and john R winder f the presidency of the high priests quorum of the stake elias morris morrie and george B wallace besides other high priests Prier sta and elders E ders all the wards of the stake were properly represented excepting the fourth and thirteenth wards of this city and the big cottone cottonwood sandy Rl riverton verton herriman west jordan d a north rth jordan brighton hunter t r and d pleasant Plea ant green ward the usual business being dispatched remarks were made as follows COUNSELOR JOSEPH E TAYLOR called atte attention ution to the prevailing mania for ale pleasure asure seeking among the people and the meglert neg lert t of fast faist 1 meetings and other sacred gather ings by those bearing the priesthood the bishops were exhorted to use their influence in the direction of a reform in these respects COUNSELOR CHAS W PENROSE gave some instructions instruction in relation to ites of removal the bishops should be careful to specify on such certificates the names of all the members who thus remove and tile the offices if any they hold in the priesthood the speaker endorsed the rem irks of the previous speaker on pleasure seeking the absurdity of bowing down to mock kings and mock dukes as in the Ogden carnival at a time too when the american nation is celebrating the birthday of liberty its freedom from monarchial and feudal institutions was gly shown COUNSELOR TAYLOR st spited cited that the salt lake stake belonged to the logan temple district but that since the dedication of that edifice it had received no do donations from this stake the fhe bishops were requested to receive voluntary donations from broin the peo pie during the coming week keep a record of individual credits and deliver the don iviona to the pres I 1 dency of the stake not later than the alth instant in order that they might send the same to logan an and d have the stake properly credited there BISHOP JOHN B R WINDER delivered some timely instructions on a variety of subjects and bore testimony to the truth of what hail had previously been said BISHOP WM 13 PRESTON followed with a few remarks in the same strain as the previous speakers spoke of the disposition prevalent among the people to neglect auti duties s ana allow others to bear the burdens that should be shared equally by all he showed that this was a work of individual responsibilities and that it was not enough that one of a family lie good and faith faithful fial for th tt would not save the rest all must be faithful all must be righteous and the unfaithful would reap no reward for the faithfulness of others unless they repented and be came obedient obelie obe client nt poo many allowed their business toome toi anae between them and the worship they owe to got god the lord had chosen this people aud given them his priesthood to buildup build up zio zion n if we proved recreant would not the lord have to find others who would be faithful if a man hired others to work for him and they failed to observe the terms of the con contrat he would be very liable to discharge them and hire others who would do as they agreed and perform their work faithfully would not the almighty act upon this principle COUNSELOR PENROSE reid re id a few words from the book of mormon relating to pride and divis loni arnon the which resulted in the breaking ulof up of the church in their day showing the lovy lovo of riches and the lust just after earthly things were the means by which satan led away tho the souls of the ancient Nep hites bites no further comment was necessary the meeting adjourned to the first saturday in august |
