Show ONEIDA STAKE ACADEMY As boon as possible after the recommendation ommen dation of resident woodruff to establish stake academies throughout zion a hoard board of education 4 was vas organized it in and for the oneida stake consisting of the stake and five other brethren having nu DO suitable building to conduct the school iu it i we proc procured ureda a hall ball in franklin and st secured cu red the services of brother samuel cornwall of salt lake 1 county as principal for the first year the attendance numbered about aboul i including the F primary de department areme nt conducted by miss mary thomas of smithfield smith field the second years yearns labors in the school have been in the same build in ing with brother jas B R rawlins bawling org of draper as principal and miss caroline C parkinson teacher in i the primary department general satisfaction has been given in the mean time efforts have been in I 1 bogress to collect means and pro pre pare material for an academy build ing preston has been selected as the s place to build it already the I 1 ase merit ment is excavated and probably J loads afro of ro k have been hauled and also considerable sand lime and other material A well has beer been dug on the ground for water which I 1 was found at about 30 feet be below 0 w th the el f surface president solomon H hale eale has been employed to superintend j the works the basement having been excavated and preparations made the board of education with i a number of other brethren met july ly 2nd and on the grounds for the purpose ot laying and dedicating the corner stone the bae upon which the stone was laid and the southeast corner stone atone were placed in position by the masons under the direction of brother nicholas summers who has been employed as waster naster of the mason work this bein ng g lone done president george C parl arkinson inson stood upon the corner stone atone at pm ind and offered the prayer of dedication which was dictated by the inspiration of the holy y spirit as all present could feel the influence thereof and we trust that the prayer offered will be fully realized in the erection of this mun much h needed deeded building committees have been appointed ila 0 each ward to collect means and a generous feeling prevails ll 11 the hearts of the saints the academy all feel ang g that such an institution is needed deeded very much in which to educate the youth of the stake in the principles of the gospel and every bran eb of useful knowledge the plan of our academy was drawn by church architect D C young oung it is to be built of rock will probably cost about twenty thousand Cl dollars Ollars and when completed will form ava a beautiful edifice a credit to the he oneida stake respectfully M F COWLEY |
