| Show A FEARFUL TRADED on sunday evening october 26 1890 joseph lewis son of samuel and sarah jane lewis was murdered by james K P pipkin and joseph W hatch forty miles west of here on the zuni RA reservation near the line of new mexico and ArI arizona ZODA the particulars and supposed cause for the committal of the deed are as follows J K P pipkin a levident les ies ident of this part some six years ago married a a sister af the above named joseph lewis but through him robbing the Post postoffice office department of some 1600 or 1700 according to his own ac threatening her life and otherwise abusing her she had bad become dissatisfied and written to her folks who were living at thatcher arizona to come after her stating she desired to leave pipkin this fall her mother with her youngest son joseph 21 years old came up to this place lace where her oldest son samuel adward edward lives to see about it she went to place seven miles from ramah made arrangements for her daughter with her two children to leave and send for her son J joseph to bring the team to convey them away wife told him she was going to leave packed up u her things consisting of bedstead sewing machine trunk etc put them into the wagon and drove on to ramah hainan to the residence of their oldest son and brother samuel E pipkin then had bad joseph lewis arrested on a charge of grand larceny aud had him taken before a justice at gallup some thirty five miles from here where he was acquitted on the evening of the of october joseph with his hie mother his bia sister eister vira wife and hertto her two children and sister bertha started for heir home at thatcher tha toner arzona the following morning pipkin and joseph W hatch had been six miles west following up enquiring about the whereabouts of the wagon with the folks rearing fearing violence S aimuel E lewis asked brothers ernst E and W H bond to go with him and they went la ia pursuit of the family and rode continuously for forty miles until about 8 p m when they suddenly came upon two saddled horses standing on one side aide of the road being under the impression that these horses belonged to the men who were in pursuit of the wagon and that they were bid in the brush they rode on ahead a few rods and halted when brother bond cried out joe joe joe hatchl hatch and immediately they heard the report of a pistol beyond them about yards in the junt juni wash then two shots followed by a scream as though some one had been seriously hurt hart voices were then heard profaning and shouting shou cing to give up then two men were observed coming toward the saddle horses to get at which they would have to pass the three brethren when the latter we were re asked by the two approaching men if chev had come to interfere until the then the three were not dot positive ve as to who these two t vo men were and therefore answered them they guessed not when within 15 feet of brother Tiet jeu the latter recognized pipkin by his crippled leg noticing that he had his pistol drawn brother demanded his surrender when J W hatch presented his pistol drawn upon brother only two feet away saying throw down your pistol P and brother did so throwing it behind him then pipkin shot at brother lewis lewie about twenty away J W match hatch shot in the same direction this gave brother an opportunity to regain his pistol when both sides fired back and forth until they had emptied their pistols and pipkin and hatch were seen to regain their horses and depart in the darkness brother lewis ran to where they bad heard the scream from and found hit his brother joseph alyin lying 9 fatally wounded only two rods fro from in the wagon camped in the wash in which were his hia mother and sis sisters terp brother immediately followed but brother bond had bad not been seen or heard during the shooting brother lewis jlewis horse had been killed and brother Tiet jene slightly wounded the two brethren then gathered up the effects and leftwitch left with the family and the remains of the young man who died within half an hour after being shot they started to return to ramah going as far as the zuni village that night and returned to bamah the following even evening lug and learned that pipkin and hatch had been seen that day in this vicinity the following dabin the evening brother bond returned stating that falling failing to be able to make his gun work he after witnessing ng the shooting but not knowing the results had bad started for st SL johns a dist nce ince of 40 miles aud and notified the sheriff who had immediately started in puri pursuit uit on wednesday october about noon just as the people were about to gather to attend the funeral of the murdered young man word came in that the sheriff had shot and killed through mistake at the sawmill saw mill creek in the zuni mountains some sixteen miles from here ira starn hatch oldest brother of joseph W hatch who had been seen there that thai day and son of ira hatch well and favorably known in utah especially in the southern part the funeral of ira starn hatch took place here this evening R |
