Show EPIDEMIC OF INFLUENZA ABOUT the middle of november a disease appeared in russian cities supposed to have originated in the far east and to have taken a westward movement which is apparently infectious in the highest degree soon after it appears in a given city multitudes are seized with it and in some instances a very large proportion or even a majority of th inhabitants are almost simultaneously affected an official report states that fully two thirds of the inhabitants of st petersburg were attacked with it within about one month of its first appearance in that city the disease as love and death are said to do levels all ranks and lays the shepherds crook beside the sceptre tre the czar was so ill that he was unable to appear in public for some days and to is said to have suffered serious prostration like a wave the epidemic has swept over europe traveling westward at an astonishing rate of speed in the large cities of germany and france hundreds of thousands of people have been attacked in berlin and paris according to accounts which have been received there has been a partial suspension of business on account of so many people being ill its ravages have extended to the western latitude and mild climate of portugal and le the king of that country has been I 1 afflicted by it the disease is said not to be a dangerous one as a rule and attacks from it usually last no longer than from three to five days only mild treatment of which quiet and rest are the main features is required it comes on with a severe headache and great pain in the back which are accompanied by extreme lassitude the symptoms of the complaint are similar to those of a severe cold in some localities however the disease has taken a more serious form has been to some extent typhoid in its nature and many cases of it have been followed by I 1 mation of the lungs in most instances instanced too it leaves the patient in very low spirits by a press dispatch in another column it would seem that great fatality has begun to attend the epidemic in paris nearly deaths being reported to have occurred within twenty four hours this report gives the epidemic a very serious aspect theories as to the origin of this disease differ some physicians attribute it to the unusually mild winter which russia and other portions of europe are experiencing others think it is caused by sudden and excessive changes in the temperature pera ture and others still hold it to be communicated by atmospheric agencies rome deny that it is infectious and hold bold that persons contract it not from one another but from surrounding conditions of atmosphere mo sphere temperature etc it is confidently predicted that the united states will be swept with this disease from press ress telegrams it will be learned that t hat it had haa leaped I pd from the atlantic r coast where it has been spreading rapidly during the last ten days to denver and cheyenne in the former city it is already widely prevalent and may many people are seriously ill from it we may look for it to appear in utah at any time |
