corner of Seventh south and tenth east streets be changed as it was unsightly referred to the committee on streets J C mather and others asked that an additional franchise be granted to the rapid transit company referred to the committee on streets the heirs of ii E riter biter represented that some years ago the estate was taxed for an extension of the water cains nains and now a second tax for thy extension was levied they asked that they be relieved from this double tax referred to the committee on waterworks water works H brisacher and others asked that ba t t mhd h water mains in be extended along a 10 mgt ird south referred street as far as fifth I 1 ehst to the committee oh ob waterworks water works E D hoyle and others asked that an electric light be placed at the corner of B to the comm committee igee on waterworks water works A protest against granting a license for sunday entertainments was presented and read it endorsed ine iffe following which was presented by rev bev temple tempie to ninth south thence west along ninth south to second west thence south to tenth South thence west to the jordan river and thence westerly to the west boundary of the city also to the committe committee 0 on streets city attorney merritt reported that the bill of dickson and van horne home for giving an opinion on the street railway franchise question was one half alf to edeh fe he also recommended that errors be corrected in deeds given to S A woolley and E F sheets the former representing both the error consisted in having the words salt lake city survey instead of big field survey the recommendations were adopted col merritt stated that the council had ordered that dickson and van horne home be asso slated with him in considering the street railway franchise question and it had oost cost the city he had had not asked for the assistance and believed he could attend to the ordinary bustness business fessand sand and if he needed help he would ask for it recorder hyams reported plate for the extension of water maint mains on second west first north and ninth streets the assessment on theme theae extensions was confirmed by the council recorder hyams reported the publication li of notices of the intention to assess assen a tax for the extension of water mains on south temple twelfth east second west second south tenth east fourth T F and B streets there had been but one objection filed bled and that was to the extension on twelfth east the extensions were ordered made J D H mcallister filed a detailed report of the cost of dredging dred in the 0 jordan excavating in UZ utah lake ake and repairing the dam in the river referred to the committee on salt lake and jordan canal the committee on fire department reported on the petition of major stanton chief of the fire department and recommended several additions to the present it fire to apparatus the committee stated that because of the new and large buildings now being erected in this make plant plans for the work they also stated that a new silsby heater beater and one thousand feet of hose should be purchased they recommended a reduction of the number of call men from 40 to 26 and the employment of an additional force of paid a id men U upon n the request of wai major lor stanton orr for an amendment to the ordinance to authorize him to cut electric wires in case of an ah emergency they reported that such an amendment was unnecessary as the provisions pro visions of cof the ordinance were ample they ask that the committee be given authority jo to carry out the recommendations made subject to the approval of thy council the report waft adopted and the necessary powers given to the committee the committee on salt luke lake and jordan bordan canal reported on favorably on the bill to grant the salt lake rapid transit company a franchise on the following streets first east street from first north street south to the city limits along eighth east street from seventh south to the south line of ninth south along ninth fast east street from ninth south to the southern limits of the city alon along tenth south street from ninta ninth east to the west line of seventh east and from the west line of fourth east to first east along third east from fourth south to the southern limits of the city the report rt was adopted and the bill was taken n up lip on its third reading mr pickard moved that first east street be stricken out from the number of streets on which it was proposed to grant a franchise franch le he thought that street should be kept clear of railways mr cohn you wish to kill the ordinance mr W pickard no sir air they may have second east I 1 only wish first east to be kept clear for travel mr Pic kanPa Is motion was lost the provision requiring a tax of 25 per car for three and if mills per capita on the passengers is carried subsequently was on motion of mr conn stricken out and a tax of if mills per capi capita ta imposed for the finally changed it to six months and hi amendment was accepted the bill was then passed 13 to 2 the noes were mr pickard who was opposed to first east street being included and mr james who would not agree to more than a 4 maximum fare of five cents on the motion of mr hall the street supervisor and city engineer were instructed to examine the location of the IR rapid d T transit ran sit com pd salt lake and jordan canal reported favorably on the petition of moon and TwIt twitchell chall asking permission to flume a portion of the canal at their own expense adopted the committee on improvements made a report on the petition of cornelius green asking the city to sell him two acres of land which included a part of the old canal bed the committee stated that bat as the now new canal was not yet constructed it might become necessary to use the old one and therefore it would not be advisable to make the sale at present mr green wanted to establish brick yards and they thought he should be encouraged they advised that the ground be leased eased to him for this purpose Eur purpose pose upon the condition that he e would restore the canal to its former condition whenever the against them the he committee did this upon the advice of the city attorney that school property was not exempted from the payment of special taxes and that the council could not remit any of such taxes city attorney merritt read from some decisions in new york in support of his view mr hall wanted to know if the council had bad not dot the power to remit special taxes col merritt they have not the power mr hall I 1 am not a lawyer but I 1 do not agree with the city attorney on that proposition the committee on waterworks water works re wu arted r ted adversely to the petitions of ugh rh A
