| Show ITEMS FROM THE NORTH I 1 made the trip from salt lake to cache countus County Coun tys ys capital by rail I 1 have performed the journey behind a pair of cayuse ponies this is all right when you want to camp on the roadside at night or haunter along at an uncertain gait inobe in the daytime hut but for my part I 1 prefer the iron horse on the train when we left chief city were about 70 passengers quite a number were young people returning from school to spend toe tae sabbath ath at their homes out of town others were called to travel for various objects and each presented a subject tor for the in one car the individual that attracted the most attention was an irishman the irish attract attention everywhere from numerous causes this one was dark complex boned had bad a alow low forehead small smal leyes eyes set far back a nose the end of which looked like a large carbuncle and prominent jaws with him were his wife everybody knew that by the commanding way in which he adar ased her a sweet looking little creature with blonde hair and large blue eyes and three children ranging from one to five years of age the ruler of this little flock seemed out of sorts from some cause and only awaited opportunity to give vent to his feelings the chance occurred when the conductor came along paddy demanded that a seat be uti unlocked locked and turned to face the other direction the coff conductor ductor looked at him said he had bad no key and remarked that the seat was facing in the right direction toward the front of the train then paddy star started teu his language was not very i choice but the stream of ad adverse verse criticism that poured pou red forth upon railway men in general and union pacific employed emp loyes in particular set the whole who lot of passengers to laughing in the midst of it all there was a vein of sympathy for the little woman who in an undertone did her utmost to pacify her lord and master and persuade him to be quiet her face suffused in blushes the she felt keenly the ridiculous spectacle he was making of himself the silent pleading of the children uniting with the mother as they looked intently upon the fathers face the family dereen route for park city this I 1 concluded from the fact that when we reached ogden and the brakeman called out I 1 this cargoes car goes through to park city they retained their places in it among the other passengers was a tall tal 1 slender man I 1 think I 1 saw him in evanston once his face was loog and thin and his board beard was much longer and was streaked with gray he looked as though he might have been the editor of a wyoming weekly paper once and had bad failed in collecting the subscriptions script ions numbered N u among the occupants of the chair car was hon A maitland stenhouse of alberta canada who has been down visiting the principal city of the saints we had bad other notables too three of them being members of the board of trustees of the agricultural college they were wm win 8 mccornick the banker and M B bowles howlee ex city councilor of salt lake and john E hills U 8 commis of provo they were going to logan to hold a meeting and determine what buildings should be erected and what work should be done at the college this summer along the route the first object of interest was at the hot springs the waters from which are an antidote for almost every form of rheumatism as well as many other diseases there were the remains of the arto grande western wreck of april 17 the track had been repaired but showed the marks of its recent displacement the locomotive tender stood upright at right angles with the track where it had run when the wheels deft left the ralls rails and near by lying lengthwise alongside of the track were two ooze cars baggage and express r so on their sides wh where e they bezen had been thrown by tho the obstruction in front the passenger coaches did not leave the rails mils and thanks to the automatic brakes the concussion was materially weakened and all of the pa passengers mengers escape esca ca LI 1 unhurt the rl e brickyards brick yards a few miles nearer woods cross presented a busy scene and form one of the indications of progress toward a thickly settled and active business region from there northward on every every side were indisputable evidences 0 of thrift industry and ae economy onomy extensive fields of grain hay bay and vegetables neat an I 1 comfortable dwellings and outhouses out houses substantial sp school hool and church building 1 P large orchards slid and numerous ditches in which was a plentiful supply of water combined to mike mae a beautiful and testify how great is the work that lias has leu performed by the inhabitants below Cen centreville treville and farmington the waters of the great salt like lake come much farther inward than they did last season indicating the increased amount of water in this inland sea whose slate colored surface as viewed from this point int makes a strong contrast wital with the verdant fields near by and the brownish colored mountains in the distance on the sandridge between kays ville and aad ogden where formerly sagebrush greasewood grease wood sand and anci jack rabbits held full sway there are now hundreds of acres of grain or laud land plowed for the reception of the seed ogden the second city in utah is thriving almost beyond the belief of those who have not beheld for themselves I 1 am not partial tu to the junction city my first introduction to it was during a three days rain min storm there were no aur plank lank sidewalks in those days and the muddy condition of the streets and sidewalks defied description on eleven different occasions occasions since then I 1 have visited the place and on ten of these there has been a rain storm the other time it was a scorching fourth of july and as we rolled into the depot on a utah ubah central train one of the mn men engaged in tiring firing a salute was so badly injured by the premature discharge of a cannon that he died in a few hours the building boom of ogden has given it a material start that comparatively ively speaking places it ahead of silt salt lake the managers of the boom finances in ogden are men who understand their business As an instance one of them mr mayne has advertising bills in one mouth month amounting to he encourages homo home talent engages home workmen uses home material and patronizes home newspapers I 1 it t is 18 not an all unusual thing for him to take a thousand extra copies of the standard the city cites Is leading paper and spread it broadcast throughout the land others do similar deeds of course ogden cannot hope to compete with salt lake in point of number of inhabitants inh abitanto though it to la making rapid strides and putting forth great efforts it is a case like aa the boy that was waa whipped by a great strapping strapping ping follow fellow lie he wanted to know how ow he could grow big enough to gratify his revenge take plenty of exercise and good food was the advice which was followed he grow as big as tile the other fellow but his well developed muscles gave him the ability to amply take care of himself in a contest ogden oden cannot grow as large as salt lake batby energy i and good management can take care of itself in business competition nine miles to the north are the noted lot hot springs the waters of which possess great medicinal qualities then nien comes the pretty village lage of willard with precipitous huou mountains rising majestically in the rear brigham city with its fertile soil extensive orchards and farms and ana many and beautiful rows of trees next claims attention one feature that is peculiar to this place is the number of fruit vendors that greet the arrival of almost every train in nearly all seasons little boys and girls girl and grown men and women engaged in the business and offer luscious fruits at low prices wending northward the country is less lea attractive for some distance swamps and ponds and dry gravelly soil follow in succession till the train begins to climb the divide that separates the valley of the great salt bait lake from cache valley while going up the incline one can gaze westward toward bear river and occasionally catch glimpses of gauge gangs of men engaged on the great bear river canal or on the new real bed for the union pacific the latter on its change of this division to a standard gauge follows the river and in place of climbing over the hill enters each cache valley by a big tunnel through the narrows then Iv il stead istead of heading direction direct for logan it turns northward no rt hward kee keeping to the aping west side of the valley tall 11 the bear river is pawed passed and the difficulties of battle creek are avo avoided leed the connection with logan and other cities in the valley Js is to be made with a loop running eastward from the narrows skirting the east side of the valley till franklin is 1 assed stud and then taking the nearest route for fora a connection with the main line on arriving at collinston collingston Col linston a scene of busy life presents itself there is all the roughness of a railway camp with the usual disregard of legal or moral restraint the hourly occurrences there would cause a severe shock in better organized communities yet in many respects there to is better order maintained and greater safety for human life than when the union and central pacific were being built and a man for each meal was sometimes the record of the day in some of the camps there leaving the station my attention was attracted by the myriads of wild flowers on the hill crests there they blossomed in blue and carru carmine lne and gold with all the intermediate hues while in the ravi ravines aes beneath and sometimes within a few inches lay jay snowbanks which the heat of the advancing season has not yet shown its effects upon soon we pass the divide and gaze upon the best watered ot 0 all ail the large valleys of utah and in all seasons except the winter the most attractive valley in appearance across it at the base of the eastern mountains tile the beautiful temple tempi rears majestically its walls of creamy white and becomes at once the first object of attention in the whole valley on the hill back of it and a little dif distance tance to the north stands the erected wing of the agricultural college which is of it seln rand structure and will be trebly more so when it is all completed complete in comparison with ten years agov ago logan has made great material advancement van cement in the city there are imposing edifices such as the tabernacle er a substantial stone building the B Y college thatcher brothers bank and other structures of brick the dwelling houses are generally neat and some of them handsome in design and appearance most of them are rustic lined with adobe for until within the past two or three years has not been successfully carried on but now it is an established industry the agricultural college being built of logan brick and many dwellings are be being ng constructed with the same salue material the city b has as been e enjoying 1 ving a real estate boom of late lo 10 this h is has not assumed very gigantic proportions though residence property has largely increased in price especially is in this the case with the bench lots which afford a magnificent view of the whole valley for a time the figures were run up to an inconsistent height but they have fallen back and prices are now quite reasonable quite a number of salt lakers have become purchasers both of residence and business property mark mr R K thomas bisone isone is one of the latter he is now owner of a lot opposite Z C M I 1 and intends to erect a store this summer logan has electric light works and a few electric lights she also has a system of waterworks water works which at present is a sort of teakettle arrangement ran gement the tank is located back of the temple but is not high enough and the supply is limited this might seem strange in a place with so much water at hand but it is the fact seeing this tile the city council took steps to place the corporation po ration on a different footing in connection with this it may be well to note a portion of the improvements made by the mayor and members of the city council who have hav just ejust retired during their term more was done for the material advancement of the cites interests and a better foundation laid for her permanent growth than has been accomplished during any like period one excellent feature was the providing of a cit city park of seventy acres in the boutt south part ot of town the tract purchased was considerably larger but ut the remainder was sold at a sufficient advance over the firso price to pay for the whole the river winds its ita serpentine course through the park and its situation is such that it can be made second to none in delightful surroundings near by are the fear fair grounds a plat of ten acres finely nely situated for the purpose intended As has been mentioned the city was practically without waterworks water works this matter was taken in hand by the city council last season the bothwell both well canal men came up and measured every stream of water that was being utilized with the intention of appropriating all of the remainder for the bear river canal the city officers saw the predicament the town would be left in with ft a river flowing into the corporation r po ration limits they would be left in a worse situation than was salt lake during the dry season of 1889 so they purchased a tract of land above the college building in a situation to give a head of water over the whole city being even sufficient to throw a stream over the temple and agricultural college t then they entered into negotiations with the directors of the upper canal which runs to hyde park anti ani smithfield for water right this was purchased at a cost of about an insignificant sum compared arh red with its value to the city this step gave the means to secure control of the whole of logan river that had not been appropriated for the city and provides an ample water supply for irrigation and for for culinary purposes for eight or ten times the present population when it is cabied through pipes there is also near the mouth of the canyon a place where a magnificent water power could be obtained and utilized this advantage was seen and taken for electric light works the 1000 spent here is now worth and sufficient power can be obtained to operate an extensive electric light plant and a system of electric street railways the supply of gravel is not as plentiful in the vicinity of logan as in many other places so last season the municipality gained control 0 what is known as the gravel lots for use in improving end repairing the city streets besides these there have been road improvements that have added greatly to the comfort of the people in providing better routes for travel but during the period of making these acquisitions the city held a great reat deal of real estate which latterly it has been disposing of the reason for holding it was that the city fathers saw that an increase in values would come and they took advantage of the conditions there was another little item regarding a tract of 80 acres of railroad land within the city boundaries A number of families had settled upon this tract negotiations bad been made first but no arrangements were perfected last summer a real estate agent made an effort to grab this land offering Dg mr U D P tarpey who had obtained possession en on from the railroad for r the 80 acres the people applied to the city authorities who presented the matter to mr there them were poor families on the landa land and they 1 il I afford to be placed at the mercy of land sharks finally mr tarpey offered to either pay the people for their improvements prove ments or to sell the land to them through the city for in ten annual payments this |
