Show returned elders elder seth H thomas gives the following report of his experience and labon ras a missionary I 1 left my ra home lit lodio 1 I 1 fh h 1886 1889 to perform pei yarm a mission to ie 0 southern states I 1 was aligned to it labor in the mississippi conference the of the same mouth found ina in 16 that state and my arst introduction to missionary life was vasa a walk ielli of a hundred and fifty in allea led add an experience ith knights of in the ithe city d I 1 remained ili ma nand months during which tame auml I 1 met blet with some success la ith the way VA of 6 midgel thin but after I 1 had ha been bee wae a or two my health began to liall fall owing to the climate obber hicy became very rife mid and rn companion elder jo beeh 8 alleta of bi veville cache co N rod ifft belf were de compelled to leave toe state ante ft had however been beba pretty canvassed and ad ahw adverse i feelth ft to us dis seemed universal elder allen alien WAS assigned to labor to in Misso missouri url and I 1 went to Nr virginia Irginia my health improved until winter came with its ita many changer ch angen and then began failing again and at times was pretty bad by the of march I 1 was rendered unable to prosecute my labors and was released to return home arriving here april I 1 met with some success in virginia but the people generally were very indifferent and incredulous and we were compelled to discontinue meetings aside from my ill III heath I 1 had a very enjoyable time and birss was blessed in many ways for which I 1 am truly thankful to the giver of all good tuesday april 22 we met elder brigham solomon of this city who I 1 returned from a mission to the sa iloan Islain islands ds on thursday last he left here may in company with elders B smoot isaac ben bett and hyrum E booth they reached bed the ireanus june 19 10 a pleasant voyage the steamer WAS met about two miles from the shore b by y a native boat on which the elders embarked and were landed on the island of tutuila where they were met by kres president ident dean and other elders shortly afterward they went 16 th tb e island of ainuu aunuu and later to that of upolu on which abla apia is at first they were occupied ing ang houses bouses and in studying the language and as soon as they were able went among the people teaching the principles of the gospel A few months ago elder solomon was seriously affected by the heat and became quite ill he never regained his health and a couple of months ago dysentery and vomiting set in he was released to return home but did not want to come and thought he would try it a little longer the steamer calls but once a month and he did not start with the february steamer after the vessel had bad gone hid he became worse ind and Pt president eident dean insisted on his return by the marchau March steamer arner which he did in the islands there are now from 80 to 90 members of the church the people listen attentively to the elders though in some places the litter latter have been forbidden to preach through the influence of the catholics brother solomon reports the elders now on the islands as in iii fair health elder wm 0 lee had a severe attack of malarial fever but has recovered the health of sister lee has been very poor but she was feeling a little better when brother solomon left on one occasion hl her r ilife life was almost despaired of and ter ber illner illness has been quite protracted elder solomons health improved somewhat on getting into a cooler climate but he is not yet free from his st sickness kness |
