| Show POOF OF HYPOCRISY TREACHERY AND dishonesty ARTHUR L THOMAS and hon HOB caleb W west are in washington ostensibly for the ibe purpose of working IP in the interest of a government building for salt lake my they were on the surface at least sen sent to the capital by the chamber of commerce to assist in the furtherance of this object they are both in the pay of the organization named being its authorized agents they have been accused of using the money and iu fluence of the chamber for the purpose of further me the antii mormon 21 disfranchisement chi legislation now pending in congress As the organization is alleged to be non there are numbers of members of it who will be elised should the bills r either of them alluded to become law hence if the accusation be true governor thomas and caleb W west have taken the poney money of certain members of the chamber of commerce forged it into a political knife and under cover of darkness stabbed them in the ake back we insisted when it was first reported that governor thomas and caleb W west were acting the role of political assassins and worse that the chamber of commerce owed it to itself and the accused that an investigation be made that the truth of the matter might be made clear otherwise should the statements be subsequently proved to ue te correct it would be parti part imps arn inis inia unwittingly or otherwise the only step taken in that direction so far as made public has been the publication of a statement over ever the signature of the acting president and the secretary to the effect that the chamber of commerce is non partisan that assertion goes as far back as the age of the chamber but hu has not the slightest t reference to the question as to whether arthur L thomas and caleb W west have while in the pay of the organization and with its influence been seeking to forward legislation that will disfranchise a number of those who contributed the means used in defraying the expenses expense 8 of their present mission to washington the governors organ indulged in much mock indignation that so serious a charge be preferred against him on the ground that such conduct would be unutterably despicable and that he was consequently incapable of it but there is s no more proof relating to the point in this simulated journalistic indignation than in brother simons alleged nonpartisan non partisan manifesto in regard to the sneaking and dishonest character of such conduct no person or paper can arouse any controversy tro versy with us as will be observed by the following estimate placed upon it in these columns herewith reproduced to call a man who would be guilty of such a breach of confidence as well as of common honesty a thief 9 would be to paw pass upon him an undeserved compliment what could be more despicable than for a man employed to further a given purpose seto to use the money paid him for the service a agreed upon against the interest 0 of those by whom the pay was furnished instead of carrying out the object for which he la Is paid to take the means of his employers and use it to aid in depriving them of their rights and liberties this would be precisely the position a large portion of the members of the chamber of commeree commerce being members of the church against which the pending ng disabling legislation is aimed the evidence e thus far is all one way in favor of the guilt of the parties against whom the charge has ben been made with particular reference to mr thomas thom in this connection we refer our readers reader sto to a horam herald special from washington reproduced in this issue which gives a clear conception of an able speech made april 24 before the house committee on territories against the struble anti mormon disfranchisement bill to ma make kethe the connection more complete we introduce the following excerpt an astonishing element in this ahls matter is 18 that the measure is seeking enactment without the endorsement of f any party in utah or the other territories territories who wants such legisla tion who asks for it no one who has any direct interest in this question A few days ago I 1 inquired of the governor of utah who is here and he stated emphatically that he was taking no part and would not do so one way or another prominent men here from utah are equally reticent I 1 I 1 at this point delegate dubois interrupted the speaker and said that governor thomas thomaa ex governor west slid and members of the utah commission who wbk were here all favored the bill and bifid thought it bloum become a law that that governor thomas had made such a statement before two or three members of the committee I 1 mr caine replied he would only repeat what governor thomas had said aid to him that he be thomas had talked the matter over and had decided to take lake no part either for or against ast the blu bill and then remarked the e committee have now both statements before them and can judge what kind of a mau man governor thomax thomas is that is direct enough there can be no d doubt ou bt whatever about the correctness ness of the statement of hou john T caine and notwithstanding the proclivity of dubols dubois to indulge in falsehood when he be thinks the truth bruin is not as useful on a special occasion what he said yesterday must be correct che latt lattery erPs assertion in regard to the position taken ta kenby by mr thomas was uttered presumably in the presence of those members of the committee with whom the governor labored in behalf of the disfranchisement bill it is not probable that the governor will deny the statements made before committee because he would run the ajah ria of having them proved anil and clinched oll nabeil in ha a way that would be overwhelming he could not do so without accusing delegate dubois of false hood and that unscrupulous individual could sustain his point by the members of the committee wab whom mr thomas urged the feces sity of the passage of the pending bill in relation to air view of such contemptible doul ie and is only needful to point to an opinion formerly expressed and quoted in the of this artic article the brief but pointed comment of delegate caine upon the conduct of cf mcthomas Mr Thomaa Thomas was in it conveyed a volume the commit tee have beth statements before them and can judge what kind of a man governor thomas is 22 |
