wednesday november 1888 at a in after six days illness fatha leishman was the eldest child of jphn leishman and jean campbell was born at shiel hill Sterling shire scotland on the of september 1807 therefore 81 years 1 2 months and 4 days old when about abdat 7 years of age his parents moved to eventually taking u up their residence at johnstone at which place pla he attained his manhood and there married jean allan in the year his occupation cu was that of a cotton spinner erand and being a natural mechanic he oftentimes employed himself in that line of business irom from his early childhood he be was inclined to be religious and was a devout and firm beli believer everin in the holy scriptures and in the divine mission of the savior his bis parents being was cop consequently somewhat partial to that denomination although never it attaching taching himself to that body nor to any other until after his hia marriage when ho he became a member of what is termed the relief church of scotland which does not no t differ materially from the presbyterian church only in the matter of the selection I 1 of their ministers for about eight years he cont continued with 1 the relief church but becoming inird I 1 lied fled with its doctrine began gan an examination of the doctrines of the other othar churches irro hoping h ing to find something more in ac cor cord pd w with ith his views and in harmony with the teachings of the savior and hio nl apostles as recorded in the holy scriptures ma Bu tafter a vain search he hopelessly abandoned au all the churches being fully satisfied that none of them possessed the gospel and religion of the lord jesus christ he became solemnly impressed with the awful condition of christendom as being devoid ot the true gospel and was consequently in a forlorn frame of mind igind regarding his future welfare when in this condition in the latter part 0 of f march 1840 elders samuel and alexander wright visited Johnstone and availing himself of the opportunity he went to bear them preach in company with some others they arrived at the door of the place of meeting just at the instant elder bider began his bis opening opening prayer to which h he e listened most attentively and before th the prayer was ended and altho although uga not ia a the presence of the elders his ni mind ind was at once satisfied that they were sent of god ater hearing bearing them preach he was wae filled with joy and rejo rejoicing icing i that he had found a religion he had bad 10 long tk g sought tor for alter after the services he took the elders IV tizel wright r 1 ht being the twelfth pe e n baptized in scotland lie ile at once became an earnest worker in the cause and although meeting ine eting great opposition in the community and among his family connections he continued undaunted esthe in the vindication ot the divine mission of the prophet joseph and remained so until the last in ithe the year 1833 1852 he and family consisting of wite wife live sons and four daughters and one daughter in law emigrated to utah in the ilist company ot the perpetual emigrating at I 1 ig fund arriving in salt lake cily on ti alie e ard 3rd d of september ol of that year he and family settled on little salt lake county and remained there two years when th they moved to cedar galley alley in the a aall t of lisel ina I 1 while there they with the church hold held a prominent in place in it being president oreb of the johnstone JobB stone branch for some time and was instrumental in bringing many into the church after his bis arrival bishop allen alien weeks in november 1857 for about fifteen years past he be has devoted much of his tinn to reading and stud study ri becoming well informed upon all lead leading ag topics of the tunes but was par ticul arly enamored with the study of all our church works ever finding solace and delight in conversing up upun m and beadi bearing testimony to the grand doctrines and chiu abilo sophy of the gospel often ex expression his bib fr gratitude eliout t tude for the prospects and blessings it held out toltie living and the dead during several deais past bebis be has often stated his willingness to go whenever the master should call him as death had no terrors lor him he hoped to die as he bo had bad I 1 lived ived with love tor for all and malice towards none although unable to speak but little before his bis death his mind retained its vigor almost to the last ilia life terminated painlessly peacefully peace lully and gloriously he gave up the ghost surrounded by his sons and daught daughters erg grand and great grand grandchildren children who were emulative in their attentions and acts of loving an ing kindness towards him and more especially in his last hours of ill illness nes from him have sprung seyen seven sons and tour four daughters ninety grand children forty nini nine great grandchildren grand children in ail one hundred and fifty eight of which number one hundred and twenty five are still living to honor and perpetuate his bis name his funeral services took at wellsville on friday nov 33 23 1 1868 at 2 rpm p m under the direction of counse counsellor wr evan owens elder david murray offered the opening prayer patriarch 0 N liljenquist of hyrum and elders alexander woodward sr cha charles r 1 I 1 spencer 4 e ile e ST sr joshua salisbury charles charie B bailey ofed an and rh ft thomas leishman were the speakers who expressed wa f satisfaction faction and adm irae tion real life and character of the ti to his bis numerous descendants affat at were present to emulate his example ard follow in his footsteps after which rider elder robt baxter offered the closing prayer when the services terminated the large lar congregation viewed the body and the e cortege moved solemnly and impressively to the graveyard where the mortal re mains of father leibman were laid away to await the resurrection of the just which he had implicit faith and assurance to have a part in elder isaac green offered the dedicatory prayer at the glave while his numerous posterity mourn the loss of a wise and good parent and judicious counselor they feel to bow to the inevitable and irreparable loss that has befallen bei allen them and are consoled with the fact that the de parted filled up his days BO 96 long spared in that his bis works will follow him
