Show priesthood MEETING synopsis of proceedings at gathering the lealar monthly meeting of tbs priesthood of the salt lake slake of zion convened in the assembly hall at 11 am today saturday december 1 1888 president angus M cannou cannon presiding all the wards ot the stake were properly represented except inic the first and eighth wards of this city and the east mill creek union draper and west jordan wards delegates ates were appointed and sustained by y the meeting to represent the above named wards I 1 the usual business having been dispatched remarks were made as follows PRESIDENT A M CANNON commented on the slackness and lu indifference ol of some of those bearing the priesthood and aad requested that they be labored with by their bishops and teachers and be induced if possible to attend their meetings and other duties they now neglect A question was asked by some one in the meeting it if it were consistent with the order of the priesthood to ordain a young boy not eight years of age a be seventy venty it if he were sick and not likely to live ELDER ROBERT L CAMPBELL clerk of the seventies by request answered the question haul it was a 6 novel question to ask and he knew at f no such instance PRESIDENT A M am CANNON added a few words upon the same subject he au answered the question propounded by asking another viz was it customary to ordain men to the priesthood until they were baptized no but in this case it would be argued the subject was innocent and needed no BO baptism ism being unaccountable baptism baFt then if I 1 unaccountable why place upon him the priesthood the speaker denounced it as a heresy he knew of no revelation relation authorizing et children kildren to be baptized under eigert years of age nor any revelation authorizing their ordination to the abe priesthood and to do that whick which god had not commanded aud using his name in vain w wae 8 abominable in his sight he touched upon the subject of sunday f funerals arte rals set at hours that would conflict with meetings where the sacrament was administered and deprecated ted the practice some staid away from the tabernacle he be said to go 90 hunting on the sabbath or tor for some other purpose and thought they fulfilled the law by attending the sunday school and partaking of the sacred emblems there tots this was not proper the sacrament was permitted in sunday schools tor for the purpose of teach teaching lug the children but elders and grown people should not remain away from the tabernacle because they can partake of the sacrament in sunday school the speaker also ref referred erred to j eject act of tithing no one he said was g jus justified rifled in neglecting this law waa god would honor one who paid his tithing regardless of what came of it more than one who laid a gift fearfully upon this altar lest it sho should ald be consumed in some way got flot anticipated and unusual it was a day of aland tri all things that could be shaken would be shaken ELDER OLIVER huntington being beine requested to speak upon the subject of ordaining infants or children under 8 years to the priesthood said he lied bad never kno known wn of such a thing to be authorized by the prophet joseph or anyone high in authority he knew of a case a bishop baptized one of his elff idren under 8 years because it was an unusually bright child he had afterwards heard that bishop confess that he be had done wrong band and that he be would have the baptism done again the meeting adjourned to the first saturday in Jan january issi 1881 |
