oct ct 28 1888 lion hon F D 11 salt lake city utah dear brother according to your re quest and my pro premise wise I 1 will endeavor to write you a few lines hopins hoping they will find you in as good health and spirits as aa they leave us at al present even though we are far from home and friends I 1 left salt like lake city oct 18 in company compia with mr moyle and mr lewis both ot oi your city the des destination tins of all of us being ann arbor mich they to take a literary anil and I 1 a medical course I 1 will not attempt to describe the wonderful scenery through which we passed on this thia route abler pens peas thin than mine have attempted it and proved unequal equal to the task neither can I 1 describe the thoughts which passed through my mind as I 1 gazed on the vast tast cliffs cliff of soll solid drock rock in those awful solitudes where they seemed to as monuments of the infinite power of the great maker of theune the universe with whom one seemed to be in closer communication than elsewhere I 1 seemed to more fully realize how puny Is the arm of man with all its wasted boasted strength and cunning compared with the arm of him who formed these huge huce mountains and chasms with all their wonders and mysteries to the lover and close observer afna of nature she teaches many lessons of interest i and profit concerning god and iris ills ways I 1 we had bad a very pleasant journey of tour four days and nights nothing of any I 1 consequence happening except except a small wao our was soon BOOB we nsf many places and things which seemed strange and wonderful to us unsophisticated young utopians Uton ians 1 and took advantage advantage or of every opportunity to gee see all we could until our eyes fairly ached with looking there are now eleven of us here from utah and idaho myself being the only lady among the number we all board at the same place which makes it very pleasant tor for us we hold bold meetings on sunday and have set act aside the first sunday in every month as a fast day that being most convenient on account of our studies brother B cluff jr presides at these meet lap Wea we are very pleased with this arrangement as we fl 11 thought we had bidden adieu to mormon meetings when we left home bro claff talks of sending for his bis family if he does so we will rent a 1 house bouse and all lodge there so that we can li hold d meetings Wee tings without danger of annoyance ourselves or er of annoying others I 1 we find here as elsewhere gross ignorance of and prejudice against e very thing pertaining to utah or the I 1 cormons mormons Mor mons not so much in the school as among the people in general As soon as they find we are from utah the first question is do you tibbe of those mormons cormons Mor mons it does at take them long to discover that I 1 am one as I 1 take no pains to disguise the fact A gentleman one of the professors kindly undertook to advise me while conversing with him to keep quiet regarding my belief it I 1 w wished I 1 shed to get into society and not be ostracised ostracized while here I 1 told him I 1 did not come here to herald myself nor my religion from the housetops but that if anybody asked toe me the question I 1 should not deny it or if I 1 ever heard beard my people misrepresented p re q e D ted or tra traducer traduced trad d U ced in I 1 U any way I 1 should not be able to keep quiet but would have to do all in my tood power ower to remove prejudice and falsehood he admired my sentiments but thought 1 LI I would do better take his advice I 1 told him I 1 did not care to make friends who would make any difference in their treatment of me on account of my bella he could not understand such seini sentiments ments probably because he Is on the wrong side I 1 am not ashamed hamed ait of my religion and do not want anybody to think that I 1 am I 1 have attended a number ot of the churches since I 1 have been here their frothy ceremonies and studied flowery sermons have only had bad the effect of showing up in clearer more glowing colors the glorious principles of our own belief we are all delighted with ann arbor although the weather has v very ery disagreeable it having rained every day almost of the five weeks w we e have been here it to is my ideal of a university hersity town not large the population being about exclusive of students there are no manufactories manu factories and not much business aside from what is kept up by the students the university which embraces nearly every branch of learning is fl grand rand michigan people are justly proud roud of it last year there were r 1600 students in attendance and there are more this year grounds and buildings are large and well appointed there is a large library a museum and art gallery to which stil students dents have tree free access both the allopathic and bome schools of medicine are represented the colleges being labout about a stones throw from each other I 1 have been attending the materia medics lectures of both school sas it is on these points I 1 they differ and I 1 wished to know knew on what grounds they each basy base their th theor earies leq in these lectures the professors never fall fail to score each other most unmercifully makin making all manner ol 01 fun of each others methods methods and doctrines this rather disgusts me r 1 I think that truth will speak for its elfand itself and that men lower themselves when they condescend to resort to sarcasm and slander to pull each other down but bat I 1 presume my opinion would not amount to in much uch in their e eyes es so I 1 may as well keep beep it to myself the medical course is very thorough every branch ot of learning that can possibly have an any kingon bearing on the practice ot of medicine is carefully oily staught and illustrated lust rated many people ta take keg tile the course who do not dot intend to practice merely for the educational advantages 11 it affords they keep us very busy we hardly have time lime to think if anybody has an I 1 idea des it is easy pleasant work to study medicine he should try it and he will find himself woefully mistaken only great love for the work and the con ness of the great power of doing i good to my fellow creatures that it gives me will carry me through to the completion of the course and the ac of all I 1 hope for still I 1 feel that I 1 am blessed in being permitted to come here and in my surroundings and ana amany friends I 1 nave have found kind anil willing to assist me I 1 find the blessings you promised upon my head are being realized and I 1 noceto nope to live worthy of them all and to be a fit fl t representative of gods people while I 1 am here among strangers excuse this loog log letter I 1 could not seem to say isay what I 1 desired in fewer words but I 1 hope I 1 have not wearied you with kind regards to U and all fri friends enas I 1 subscribe kysely myself your sister J A MACDONALD 37 south twelfth street
