| Show STREET CARS AND COMMON SENSE E there is need of improvement in our street car service there is no occasion for the rumpus that some same designing persons persona are attempt attempting in to create we hope the city council will ahot be influenced by the senseless attacks which are being made for a purpose on the street railroad com ft pany it if the object in view is simp simply ay the public benefit that bethink we think luk can ibe be secured by a rational and truthful statement of defects and a respectful demand for what is needed to remedy them we are gratified to know that them the persistent and ridiculous abuse of th company com in which some badly balanced scribblers scribble rs indulge is not net approved by the traveling public except perhaps a very few chronic grumblers grumbl ers and persons who delight in that kind of senseless ann if nn it is a common thine to hear respectable Gent gentiles fles express their disapprobation of the exaggerated and uncalled tor for denunciations of bf a street car system that is at least as ai good as can be found in other cities pt a similar size to oursa ours now what lare the real and tal oal causes of complaint against tile the street streetcar car company so far as we know I 1 hey bey are these tile the drivers in some instances at least are inattentive to passengers that is a real grievance tt it is a fact that people wilt will often run up or down a street when a car is dassira passira pas sira a street that intersects and yil at the top of their voices but bat all to no purpose ahe the driver rushes on without turning his head to the right or the left and so pas passengers seagers are left aud add the company loses the fares this is no groundless grumble we know by personable observation that it i t is a fact and we have heard beard no BO end ot of complaints of a similar character thia Thi is an evil that can be remedied we believe the drivers work long hours and that their posit n is not to lo be envied but bat they are not ensil to read books or papers while ua on duty aud and thy they ou ought ht to look tor for ipa at ivery crossing this vault might occur under any system aind with adv company it is not pe cnair to salt lake city as any traveler must kno know w new york city is now kicking bobtail car because it lias has do conductor to take fares and for or passengers washington D 0 makes a similar complaint but buethe the press state facts ina fair way and without abuse the washington post for instance speaks speake in this way the residents of washington as well ell as strangers within our gates have been very tolerant of the bobtail car or it would ere this date have disappeared from all the prominent lines of street rail railways Alays it is a device that need not be contemptuously spoken of for it has been greatly useful f u I 1 in the past in many localities and will continue to be maua use used for many years to come whenever nuver tae business to be done by a street railway rail way will nut not justify ane putting on of two horse cars and conti ti actors so that it is a choice between or none those ugly little contrivances tri vances must be respected whenever the business wirl warrant better facilities the bobtails bob tails should be run off without delay in the east the bobtail car hits has usually but one horse it has no conductor passengers have to put their fares in the box two have acon a conductor who watches for passengers aud and collects fares that is a much better plan than the bobtail system but it is almost doubly expensive cities of much larger population than salt lake are glad to have even the one horse car lines the cars do not run ran often enough to suit some people that can be remedied it if it is necessary it is not dot right to charge that they have no schedule time they must have to pass each other on the switches a which which they do usually with steady regularity as people living near those switches can testily every half hour they meet and they are rarely out of the schedule time three times an hour is the service on first south street east and nd down to the D R G depot inthe itlie business part of the city was greatly extended more frequent cars might be a public necessity as it Is now the demand is not net pressing and it is very doubtful it if it would pay expenses to increase the number of tr trips leol requiring more cars teams and dr drivers v the cars look shabby that is perhaps correct and they might be made more presen presentable tabe but it is not reason sufficient for condemning the service and consigning the comp company t to 0 O everlasting woe more attention ach m might t be paid to both internal and efte external n nal appearances but some allowances should be made for the dry season and this extremely dusty city cars are not put on to meet the late trains it is said well there may be something in that perhaps the company would make special arrangements for the late bathing trains or on anything like a decent cent inqui inquiry explain the reason why this special demand cannot be met this requirement must not be treated however as a public necessity it is a want felt but by comparatively few individuals divi duals in large and populous cities street cars run till midnight sud aud in some placa watter atter that time this necessitates a double gang of drivers it is not likely that such a system would pay expenses here the public have to be reasonably accommodated but the company should be allowed to make a reasonable profit on their investment one improvement that might be made and which the traveling public would world appreciate is the tr transfer anster system it is in operation in almost every city of any pretensions passengers for instance from tile the lith ilk mhd wards ought to be able abe to change at main street for the utah central depot and other points west and northwest and vice versa without paying double fare this could be easily arranged and in such a way that the company would be secured grom from imposition and the public better accommodated commo dated this is wanted by the people more than any other cha chalke e but the daily growlers prowlers grow lers do not make a any y mention ol 01 it perhaps that would on not be exactly what they are after when the hue and cry that has been raised is toned down to the notes of common sense the valid objections against our present streetcar street car service do not sound very formidable we are of the opinion that there is speculation behind the tumult it if the prent company which has done iti I 1 is ty by good service by introducing the street railroad can DC be ani off the track outside capital may be induced to make a new investment not per haps to the profit of the investors but of the manipulators of the scheme the selling of franchises franch isee is no new way of making a raise we do not think speculators of that char character acte are entitled to any special favors the public interest should be first and next if any one is considered it should be in our opinion those who have served the public in the ibe past and whose interest it is to continue the borr wor kand and improve and progress with the times there is no big boom on in this city at present there is no reason to expect a sudden ex of our town or a great rush of po population gradual growth we expect and should provide lor for but there is no occasion tor for excitement cit ement on the street car question if there is to be a change of methods in transit let the best modes be well considered and when the change comes make it for the permanent good ot of the permanent citizens but dont let a senseless tirade against any company influence the action of public men most of the dally daily dingdong ding dlag dong about kicking mules and hourly cars and no DO service and disregard of the public is little else than a mixture of malice and idiocy |
