| Show oa registration in ig may last when wen rudger badger clawson applied to tie the deputy registrar for registration he was refused permission to do 0 o u on the ground that he tad boen convicted of polygamy poly mr clawson insisted that be was not sub act to the provision provi of the edmunds tucker bill in that regard as he was convicted before its passage and besides he had received an unconditional and complete baidon pai don from the president of the united states the registrar still refused to assent and the matter was appealed to the utah commission for determination that body ruled in mr Claw sons favor as the following opinion given by them will show A man having the legal qualifications of a voter or officeholder office holder under the territorial laws and who is not now under any of the dis qualifications of congress unless it be the conviction hereinafter named who was in november 1881 convicted eted of polygamy and unlawful cohabitation and sentenced to flye fite years imprisonment in the penitentiary and to pay a fine of WO and afterwards in Dec december enber 5 1887 received a full and unconditional pardon from the pre president ident of the united states stated the question is whether such person is entitled to register and vote and is eligible to office our opinion is that such person is entitled to be registered as a voter upon taking agthe the oath prescribed by act of C congress angress on gress at the proper time of registration and that he is ia eligible to office on the same ame terms |
