Show 8DTHE THUNDERBIRDDSOUTHERN PAGE Comedians yuk "WOW! This horticulture horror will have you screaming with laughter!" - Neiv REVIEW BY CHERIS TUCKER York Post Thunderbird Arts Editor A surprisingly professional ensemble of comedy and music hit the SUU Starlight Club Friday night when Tom Zdvnich and Sharlene (Gigi) Wilson opened for Lance Crouther. Although the show started out extremely strong, it did slow down noticeably by the ending. Maybe two hours is just too much for an SU audience to sit through. Zdvnich started the evening with some classic hunting spoofs, characterized by abundant usage of a stereotyped good ol southern Utah accent. The accent could have been used more sparingly, but the audience slurped up his jokes about how serious Utahns take hunting as if they were the free drinks everyone was supposed to get. Although the Starlight Club was his first public performance, Zdvnich appeared to be totally comfortable in front of the crowd. After Zdvnich told his jokes he brought Wilson onto the stage and together they meshed musical talent vocally and on the guitar to produce a sound better than anyone was expecting from two SU students. Their selections featured both mellow and blues tunes, including Thats What I Like About You, which the audience responded to like a horde of teenyboppers. Although the talent the duo displayed was impressive, the audience was almost completely apathetic at times. This is always such a tough crowd, Julie Stuart, former SUUSA president, said. However, Wilson and Zdvnich overcame this obstacle by plunging on with energy, and were rewarded at the end of their performance when they were applauded vehemently. Crouther, a comedian who has appeared on The Cosby Show and Comic Strip Live, then took the show over and continued the pace. The black versus white issue was one that he continued to touch upon throughout the evening, at times making people feel uncomfortable. When he discovered that the only black students in the audience were in the back he said, You all can sit in the front now this is the 90s. Although his constant exaggerated blatancy about racial relations made some feel a little alienated, on the most part he enveloped the audience with his insights into life. He touched on everything from drugs to vegetarianism, from Jehovahs Witnesses to masturbation. Crouther progressed from subject to subject without the audience ever knowing where he was going to go next or how he was going to get there. He even surprised the audience at times with how far he delved into certain subjects, but he always knew when to get himself out of the holes he created. for w 586-368- 3 it 'fi Snow is HERE!!!
