Student Jake Shewmake moderated the forum that included candidates Mitch Dettamanti, Walter Mammel, Alan Hamlin, Evan Vickers and Dale Brinkerhoff. The first question posed to the candidates was how they proposed to relieve the housing problem. Dettamanti said he felt that the problem would take T Capitalism care of itself through private enterprise. works, he said. The private sector should take the lead, which would benefit everyone. Mammel echoed Dettamantis view that the private sector should be responsible for the housing crunch. There are some things the city can do, he said, which include lowering sewer and hook up costs along with franchise taxes. Hamlin took a different stance, saying The city should do everything it can to control the problem. For instance, he said, the city created the housing authority. Hamlin said the city should facilitate the development of rental units. Vickers said that if students want to stay in Cedar City, the city should make it possible by providing housing and jobs. By working together we can create an atmosphere where students can stay, he said.
