Dugout optimistic for spring season LUXURY MODEL BY NEIL COSLIN It is a whole new ball game for Bill Groves, head baseball coach at SUSC. The thought of Division action has caused Groves to seriously evaluate the possibilities of the upcoming season. "It will be a tough change," said Groves, " but we're excited about going to Division I." Normally the baseball season occurs in the spring, but the fall is used as an exhibition season for the coaches and squad. The first 'Bird home game is Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. against Snow Junior College. The competition is expected to be more difficult than it's ever been for the Thunderbirds, and many people are skeptical about the possible outcome. Although the fans are uncertain about the team, the players have a positive attitude. "Wherever the team needs me. I'll play," said returning senior Tom Griffin. Griffin, formerly of Las Vegas, knows what it's like to go head to head with top notch competition. "The team has more unity than it ever has," he continued. "We know it will be hard, but we just aren't willing to give up." Surprisingly, the weather is more of a factor than people realize. "It's not only hard to keep good traction and accuracy," Griffin said, "but our bodies get tired easily due to the cold weather. When a person has to be constantly active, their muscles tend to become stiff and less mobile." Griffin's main concern, however, is with team camaraderie. "We have to maintain the field," he said, "and the hard work along I The new IBM Personal heelwriter tj pewriter. the new IBM1 Person j Even though it s lim piiLcd Wheelwnter isahigh lunuion (v pointer Itsiompact mc his the Uassroom Iioiik orollice And it has many new advanced icaiures. along wtih traditional IBM relia bihly jruthc classic IBM (ouch O! course, wc also carry the new high quality IBM typewriter ribbons Call or stop b to see us about the IBM Personal Wheelwriter tspewnter It s the W heelwnlcr that s always within reach Authorized Dealer Typewriters SOUTHERN UTAH OFFICE MACHINES & SUPPLIES 11 NORTH MAIN 586-813- 9 OFF ALL MERCHANDISE 20 SHEARCOUPON DLITE WITH STUDENTBODY I.D. 5 ONLY AT 41 N. Transfer student Mike August and incoming freshman Scott Hofferber were impressed by Groves' willingness to overcome any obstacles which might arise. "It'll definitely be a tough season," said August, "but Coach Groves is so confident that I have no doubts about the team's ability to do well." In addition Hofferber said, "Groves is just such a nice guy that it's easy to have the determination that it takes to have a winning season." Looking at the fall schedule, the team feels determination and unity are definitely going to be a factor in the season's outcome. The 'Birds' first game, Oct. 6, with UNLV is at Las Vegas. Even though the weather in Las Vegas is extreme compared to Cedar City, Groves is confident. "There is a lot of willingness and desire to win," Groves said. "I feel that we have the talent it takes. SUSC baseball will do well in Division I." The returning seniors have become the nucleus of the team. "I'm looking for the seniors to be leaders on and off the field," Groves continued. One of these seniors, Jeff Nelson, has been called upon in the past to fill this role, and is expected to continue this season. "In short," Groves said, "we have a lot of players that are willing to take the challenge that Division has to offer." Assisting Groves will be pitching coach Layne Hales; infield coach, Brian Whitaker; and first base coach Gordon Dotson. According to Groves, the season will be full of challenges and pitfalls, but he and the team look forward to the competition. 586-278- 1 ONLY AT SHEAR DLITE 27 NORTH MAIN STREET I |
