He said that although Hiroshima was devastating and horrible, it was nothing compared to what a nuclear war even a limited nuclear war would be like today. If a bomb was dropped in the USSR, the radiation and fallout would reach the USA in as little as 0 days, thus affecting the whole world and not just the area being bombed. Wasserman said, "There is no safe amount of radiation. Even small, amounts do harm." Radiation causes lung cancer, thyroid tumors, bone cancer, leukemia, liver and kidney cancer, mutations and premature aging. Wasserman showed slides and described what happens to a population when it is exposed to radiation. Birth defects rise (on a reservation in New Mexico, where almost all of the adults work around radiation, the mutation rate in newborns is 50 percent), small children suffer, plants and animals are affected. Wasserman suggests that if you feel you have been exposed to radiation or are concerned with this international problem write to: 317 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, Washington DC 20002 for more information. Even today don't go within five miles of a nuclear power plant, unless am in a speeding car," said Harvey Wasserman, antinuclear activist. Wasserman spoke about nuclear issues ranging from Hiroshima to the present day dangers of nuclear energy in Thursday's Convocation. Wasserman became involved in the fight against nuclear power plants and nuclear testing when he and his friends discovered that a nuclear power plant was going to be built near their homes in 1976 He began to research the issue and soon realized the danger in nuclear power. He and his friends started a local campaign which consisted of spots on radio stations, press coverage, petitions and determination It paid off Within one year, the power plant construction had been postponed, and four years later, the plant was cancelled. Wasserman has been called "America's n reporter on nuclear topics." His articles have been published in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Esquire, Rolling Stone and numerous other publications around the world. He is also the author of four books.
