Show FACE 2 THE THUNDERBIRD MONDAY NOVEMBER 9, 1987 Vlf? Successful for SUSC Representatives When the gavel came down October 30, the 15th annual Utah Intercollegiate Assembly (UIA) came to a close. Three bills were presented by SUSC, one successfully passing both the Senate and House of Representatives. UIA serves in a legislative advisory capacity to the Utah Student Association (USA). Once every year, each school sends a delegation of students to participate in the the Utah State Legislature. For SUSCs delegation, said Darin Bird, ASSUSC political affairs director, it was a very successful three days. SUSC delegates presented a bill urging the Utah State Legislature to ammend Utah law so that sales made at all college and university book stores shall be considered taxable sales, said Bird. At present, all campus book store sales are being taxed with the exception of BYU. The BYU book store currently taxes everything except text books, said Bird, our bill presses uniformity, expressing the desire to have all textbooks taxed equally throughout the state. Marni Madsen, ASSUSC senator and UIA delegate chairman said the money (approximately $300,000 per year) raised by the tax, would be added to the state general fund which pays for all state services, therefoie benefiting Utah residents. Governor Norman H. Bangerter, in his addiess to the UIA delegates, said Utah is the only state with this type of forum in which student views and ideas can directly influence the state legislature. SUSCs delegation included two senators, Marni Madsen and Darin Bird, three representatives, Jim Stocks, Lynette Johnson, and Dave Martson, and Roshell Proctor and Tenaly Heaton served as staff.
